Our library is a large and busy place that is, both literally and figuratively, the heart of the school. Despite being one of the oldest high schools in the state, our mission is rooted in the future as we work to prepare the students of today for the world of tomorrow.
Our students are amazing.
Despite the challenges that many of them face, they still come to school each day excited to learn and grow and to make a difference in the world. Our diverse population is made up of 1600+ students, roughly 60% of which are minorities, with approximately the same amount receiving free or reduced lunch. But what really defines our students is their capacity to give to others and their almost intoxicating desire to change the world. Their talents and abilities are restricted only by the resources we are able to provide as fuel for their imaginations.
My Project
These funds will be used to help us transform our library into a 1st class maker-space. This space will empower our 1600 students to use the tools of tomorrow to harness all their creativity and imagination to build solutions to real world problems. We will use the engineering design process to help students identify problems that need their creative genius, imagine possible solutions, and then bring those solutions to life in the maker-space using the 3D printer and plastic filament. Successful designs will be shared in a school-wide maker-fare where business and community leaders will judge the designs and talk to our students about applying this work to life beyond high school.
When today' students are given the opportunity to imagine, design and make, as part their school work, they become tomorrow's world-changing engineers, artists, and innovators.
The world needs young makers. And these young makers need Âmaker-spaces. By helping us transform our library into a maker-space, you will be helping provide our students with the tools they need to grow into tomorrow's leaders, today.
