Want to improve your communication and public presentation skills? Whether you’re working with groups or meeting with clients one-on-one, good communications skills are critical to success. We’re offering three in-depth trainings on best practices in public speaking, improving interpersonal communication skills and cultural competency. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required.

Meeting the health care needs of a diverse population requires cross-cultural awareness, sensitivity and respect. In this course, you will learn to identify ethnic neighborhoods in the Kansas City metropolitan area, compare cultural behaviors of different ethnic groups and better understand how differences in poverty level, language and education affect a family’s access to health care.
In this course, you will learn to:
- Define culture, cultural-competency and diversity as it relates to ACA.
- Identify barriers minorities face in accessing health care.
- Explain to clients what health insurance is and the importance of medical care.

Covering the essentials in interpersonal communication, this workshop will offer practical tips on connecting with ACA constituents in a one-on-one setting. You will learn techniques to improve active listening skills, the power of questions, how to effectively use non-verbal communication and tips on sharing information constructively. You will also develop a profile of ACA constituencies, analyze users’ motivations and barriers, and learn how to adapt the message for different target audiences.

Offering a comprehensive overview on the basics of public speaking, this session will give you the tools you need to deliver dynamic presentations about the ACA in group settings. You will learn techniques for structuring a speech, working with time constraints, understanding the audience, and polishing your style and delivery. The session will also allow you to collaboratively develop and compose a core “stump speech” you can use and modify when presenting to various key groups.
