The world of photography has lost an icon. Press agency Phaidon is reporting that, after a long battle with cancer, Magnum photographer René Burri passed away earlier today at the age of 81.

There’s very little chance you’re not familiar with Burri’s work, even if you didn’t know it was him that captured it. But just in case anybody is, as a tribute, we’re reposting this short PORT interview with Burri from last year.

In it, he shares the story behind six of his best-known images, offering insights into how he became the iconic photographer we all knew, and some of the adventures he experienced in order to capture the photos he did.

To hear a personal story about Burri’s relationship with one of his mentors, the great Henri Cartier-Bresson, be sure to read Phaidon’s tribute by clicking here. And if you have any kind words, stories or tributes to the great photographer, feel free to share them in the comments down below.
