Met Éireann has issued a weather warning for many counties.

The wind warning came into effect at 7pm tonight and is in place until 2pm tomorrow.

Strong to gale force winds are forecast for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon, Munster and Leinster.

South to southwest gales or strong gales are expected along all Irish coastal areas and on the Irish Sea, veering west to northwest overnight and increasing gale to storm force.

The inclement conditions have already caused some cancellations for passengers with Irish Ferries cancelling the Jonathan Swift service for tomorrow.

Customers will be accommodated on other sailings.

P&O Ferries have also been forced to cancel crossings.

Passengers have been advised to check the relevant website for the latest information.

Meanwhile, Aer Lingus has said authorities at London's Heathrow Airport have requested all airlines reduce their flight schedules tomorrow due to strong winds.

As a result two round trips between Dublin and Heathrow have been cancelled.

The flights affected are EI 158 and EI 159, and EI 168 and EI 169.

Aer Lingus customers have been informed of the changes.

Winds are forecast to calm down by tomorrow evening  and should give way to some dry and sunny weather.

The Met Éireann warning was put in place following the arrival of Hurricane Gonzalo which caused widespread damage across the Caribbean last week.
