TOP 100 AMAZON BESTSELLING AUTHOR, PAUL REGA PRESENTS A TWO PEDAL WORLD SERIES

A TWO PEDAL WORLD-THE BEGINNING (Book 1) #1 Memoirs and #1 School-Age Children
A TWO PEDAL WORLD-THE JOURNEY (Book 2) #1 Cycling #1 Travel #1 Cycling Travel Guides #2 Travel Essays & Travelogues

It was a magical time--a two pedal world, when bicycles weren't just a toy--they were a kid's chief mode of transportation. A coming of age story about the adventurous life of a boy growing up during the 1950's through the early 70's in a Midwestern town. Discipline was harsh, supervision often rare, and adventure was high.

Parents struggled to maintain the innocence of their children, despite a grim reminder of war, and the inequities of an adult world caught up in the emotion of the times. When a dollar of penny candy could fill your paper bag, baseball was king, and kids played outside well into the evening.

A Two Pedal World-The Beginning, morphs from a few kids playing and riding their old bikes to a 1,400-mile journey of a lifetime on bicycles in the book's sequel, A Two Pedal World--The Journey.

Review

"Two pedal world has a significant place in my heart. Anyone raised in the Midwest during this era of the scouting program knows how much fun it is. Paul Rega was in the Chicago area and my father came from there and instilled in his children the Indian guides, Boy Scout, and Explorer Scouts. Very good read and very interesting stories." --Robert Landeck "A coming of age book, well written and interesting, especially to those of us who lived through that era. I was a den mother for each of my three sons and wonder now at our matter-of-fact courage as we went on long hikes and day camps in comparatively wild and certainly uninhabited countryside. Good book." --Leqinta Wheeler

I admit I expected it to be more about bicycling somewhere from the title. Instead it is a personal little essay about life in the 50s in the Chicago area. Nice enough, but really needed some editing and had a tendency to meander around. However, if you want to know what this guys life was like as a kid, here you go.

The true story of a group of Boy Scouts that rode their bicycles from a suburb of Chicago to Jacksonville Florida one summer during the seventies. I was living in southern Wisconsin at the time and do remember this event. It still seems awesome to me, sort of like hiking the Appalachian Trail. This story is told by one of the Scouts after he became an adult. His memory and recounting of details is phenomenal.

”My friends and I, mostly out of fear during our early childhood, learned quickly to respect all authority figures, including our parents and teachers.”—location 418

Presumably about some of my favorite things—boyhood, the 60s, and bicycles—Paul Rega’s, not so terribly well written, memoir of his first fourteen years, A Two Pedal World: The Beginning (Book #1) is quite dull. It has a two-dimensional story arc that goes from first I did this, then I did that, and then I did something else. None of which is anything anyone could care much about.

Perhaps the sequel, A Two Pedal World: The Journey (Book #2), supposedly about the one month, 1,400 mile bicycle trip Rega’s boy scout troop took, from Illinois to Florida, in 1972 might be a bit more interesting, One could hope. And perhaps someday I will read it.

Recommendation: Spend your $3.99 (Kindle price) at your own risk.

I kept waiting for something to happen that would make me think this would be worth more than one star but just didn't happen. It's poorly written, maybe at the middle school level. It reminded me somewhat of a "what I did on my summer vacation" paper but not nearly as interesting. There were a lot of misspelled words, improper usage and poor punctuation, mostly a lack of commas (I'm talking about the basics.)

I'll make sure I read the full title next time as I didn't realize this was one of two books. I won't waste my money, even $3.99, to read the rest of the story. The tale could easily have been told in one book, two sections. This story didn't engage me enough to care about what happens next.

Ok if you have a love for scouting. Brought back memories of my 27 years as troop committee chairman for a 65+ boy troop that was very active. Camped a minimum of once a month, besides summer camp, and one high adventure trip every summer. Philmont 6+ times, Canadian boundary waters several times, and Sea Base in Florida. Also had multiple boys staff Philmont Junior leader training course, as well as regular back country staff. A truly boy run troop that worked. Have always said I think my son learned more in scouting about life than 4 years of high school.

What struck me the most about this book were the parallels with my life and involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. It was a refreshing read with all of the adventures that kids wish for. I am a little saddened though that today's children are too interested in their cell phones, tablets and PCs to even think of getting outside and living life to its fullest. I will definitely read Book #2.

If you have read the authors best selling book, Trail of 32, then this is a must read! It takes you right back to the beginning. A true story filled with nostalgia and reminiscent of the times. While reading this story I was taking back to my own childhood, when money was sparse and we all had to make do with whatever we had at hand. Kids played out in the streets and made up their own games! This is a truly great story. If you are a fan of biographies and memoirs then you will love this as I did. The author weaves an intricate story that will keep you turning the pages. A beautifully written story. Highly recommended read...

Paul Rega The Beginning.
A Two Pedal World.
This book was inspired by the novel Trail of 32, and if you read that fantastic book you will love this one. This book follows the growing up from youngster to teenager from the 50s to the 70s, when bicycles were mode of transport and their plaything.
I liked this book so much as the author describes each phase so well, you actually feel you are part of the story.
Looking forward to reading the follow up.
