I'm kind of torn about this between a four star and a three and a half star so I'm going to say three and a half star. The story was good well written psychological thriller I'm really loving these lately. The father does well with keeping the entry level or the anxiety level high waiting for the other shoe to drop. Lots of twists and turns however not knowing the character's name the widow, also her being returning but making some really piss poor decisions make it kind of hard to take. The ending well that was a little over top but it worked. Overall it's a really well-written story that I'm sure most will enjoy more

I struggled with this book, valiantly I might add, as I despised ALL the characters, and I do mean ALL of them. I only had positive feelings for the dog. The human characters were either manipulative or vile beings, stone-cold sociopaths, selfishly annoying, or in the case of the main character - incredibly limited in functioning brain cells. One character had snarkily noted, “How you ever got to be an attorney, I’ll never know” I had the same thought - all the way through - how could she have been so gullible? But then again, I couldn’t seem to help myself either. I wanted to unravel this tangled mess as I was curious to know the real secrets buried beneath all the sinister maneuvering and deceit, and I had a feeling those secrets would be huge. While the pacing of the vast majority of this tense tale was agonizingly slow, the last few chapters zipped and pinged with action-packed and clever twists and reveals that almost made up for the disappointing lead-up, almost. The wily author did keep me reading with cunning elements and an intriguing premise, but the framing and tedious execution were a disappointment and could have been so much better.

Bookouture come up with some of the most amazing covers for their books and The Wife’s House is no exception. I could not help but be drawn to this house, known as Cliffside and I just had to know what goes on behind those glass walls. It certainly does give off an ominous and foreboding vibe, that sets off the tone of the book perfectly. The story was intriguing to me in its originality and I couldn’t wait to jump in and get caught up in it. It has been very well thought through and plotted and right from the get go I felt uneasy, on edge and on a number of occasions, I had goosebumps with it’s creepy undertones. The setting couldn’t have been more perfect and just enhanced the story all the more. The characters have been well developed and although not all likeable have been written well. I also found it really interesting that we were never told the main protagonist name and she is just referred to as “The Widow”. It did mess with my head though, as I had to flick back through the pages to see if I had missed it, but it did add another layer of mystery to the story. The first half of the book is a slow burn as the foundation is laid, but at no point was I frustrated by this. I think this was helped knowing in the background that the tension and suspense was slowly bubbling away. When it boil over, it really does make for more of a thrilling second half, with some twists that will catch you off guard. This is the first book I have read from Arianne Richmonde and I would definitely read more from her. I enjoyed how she was able to draw me into the world that she has created here and really has delivered a thrilling and enjoyable read.
