Dual Camera Technology Puts a Fine Point on Phone Photography

The latest smartphone camera technology these days features something known as a “dual camera.” Manufacturers have been tweaking this technology for several years, but it’s only been within the past year that it’s become available as a standard feature on premium devices like the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9+, and Samsung Galaxy Note8, each of which offer dual 12 MP cameras. For those of us who already love the quality and convenience of smartphone photography, it’s a wonderful new tool. While there are some variations on each model, here’s a general overview to help you understand more about what dual camera technology means for you.

If you look at the back of your phone, you’ll see a small camera lens. In a smartphone, the camera module is quite tiny, since the phone itself has to be slim. Inside this tiny module are multiple lens elements, including an image sensor and sometimes even motors for optical image stabilization. With a dual camera setup, there are actually two lenses, placed side by side horizontally or vertically. This gives the device two complete, independent camera modules that work together to produce sharper, richer images. Typically, the primary lens does the main work while the secondary lens adds fine detail by capturing additional light, increasing the field of view, or adding background effects like a soft blur.

Depending on the settings included, dual camera technology can help you get clearer, more detailed photos by enabling an ultra-wide-angle mode, or help you take photos with a shallower depth of field to make the subject stand out. On some models, the dual camera setup adds one or two times more optical zoom so you can take closeups without them looking blurry or pixelated. This means that you can focus on the face of a person, or a plant, and really capture fine details.

Best of all, manufacturers are continuing to refine dual camera technology, and according to most industry insiders it is expected be available on an even wider selection of smartphones in the near future. It’s already possible to take beautiful, nearly professional-quality pictures with most smartphone cameras, and that functionality just continues to get better!

I just want to say that I am SO COMPLETELY SATISFIED with Consumer Cellular! You are GREAT! I signed up several years ago, bought a “Doro Flip-Top” phone at Sears, and have totally enjoyed the service you provide!
I needed Customer Service a few years ago, and not only was my issue resolved quickly, but I was glad to talk to someone whom I could understand! Not someone in S. America and/or Bangladesh!

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

That’s great to hear, Michael, and we really appreciate you sharing your experience. We appreciate you posting, and we look forward to serving you for years to come!

Recently my tv service supplier aaked in a survey to rate their customer support. I rated it poor, primarily because I have considerable difficulty understanding their representatives who are in foreign call centers. Then they asked why I prefer Consumer Cellular for my mobile service. My answer was because of your lower cost and excellent customer service. I greatly appreciate your US based call centers and knowledgeable representatives who are easily understood. Please retain your domestic call centers and great customer support representatives. Thanks!

Thank you so much for such a lovely compliment, Dennis. We know that our customer service sets us apart, and we truly have the best employees in the business!

  6. Pete says

Will Consumer Cellular be supplying the newer Moto G6 phones, which have this Dual Camera Technology at a fraction of the cost of the pricey iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy models you list?

    • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Great question, Pete! At this time, we aren’t offering those devices, but if we do add them to our lineup in the future, we will be sure to notify you here on the blog and in other places on our website. Thanks for posting!

      • Dan F. says

I’m considering moving from Verizon to CC, and I have a Moto G6 (which I like a LOT). It’s an unlocked GSM device. Can I assume that I can use the G6 with a CC SIM card?

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for asking, Dan. In most cases, fully unlocked GSM phones are a great fit with our SIM card. You can see how easy it is on our website here. If you’re ready to give our service a try, you can order a SIM card online, call us at 888-345-5509 or swing by a Target store near you. We appreciate you taking the time to learn more about us, and we hope to see you as a customer soon!

      • Paul says

Any progress with making Moto G6 available through Consumer Cellular?

        • Ashley at Consumer Cellular says

Thanks for checking in, Paul! We don’t offer that option at the moment, but our SIM card would be a good fit for a fully unlocked GSM version. You can learn more about that option here. We hope you have a great day!
