Alumni Career Pathways: Demystifying Non-Profits

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about the non-profit world. Can you make a living working for non-profits? How do you find an organization you would like to work for? What skills do you need to land a job with a non-profit? Is the non-profit model sustainable?

This is your chance to demystify non-profits by hearing from alumni who have chosen to work for non-profit organizations.

Get advice on finding an organization that you like, finding a job or internship, and how to navigate the sometimes murky waters toward making a living while making a difference.

PANELISTS INCLUDE:
* Zack Mezera is in his fifth year as an organizer, co-founder, and executive director for the Providence Student Union, a youth-led organization in Providence, RI. When not busy building demand for more democratic education policies, Zack is exploring diners and supporting various electoral campaigns across Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown in 2013 with concentrations in Religious Studies and Public Policy.

* Danna Freedman-Shara, Brown University class of 2006 (BA, Psychology), has been working as a manager for more than ten years.  Her leadership skills and training have enabled her to bridge various industries, from a hair salon to a salvage yard to a non-profit health center. Danna currently works as the Health Center Manager for Planned Parenthood of Southern New England.  She has been in this role for three years, and has found it be an exciting and challenging position with constant opportunities for growth.  In this position, Danna is responsible for overseeing daily health center operations, personnel management, budget planning, and implementing agency-wide strategic initiatives.  Danna obtained her Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2012 from Bryant University.

* Florian Schalliol is an Associate at FSG, a nonprofit strategy consulting and strategic evaluation firm that helps nonprofits, foundations, government organizations, and corporations achieve a larger social impact. To date, Flo's work at FSG has included creating an international geographic prioritization plan for a foundation focused on strengthening the data and legal systems for philanthropy around the world, developing a suite of demand-side global health interventions for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and writing a case study on the practice of effective charter school authorization. Flo also currently serves as the Fellowship Program Manager at the CLASSY Awards, the largest awards ceremony for nonprofits and philanthropy worldwide. While at Brown, Flo was heavily involved with the Swearer Center for Public Service, where he was a Social Innovation Fellow (previously C.V. Starr Fellow) for developing an expansion strategy into India for a shared value consulting firm. Flo has also previously worked or consulted for various nonprofit for for-profit social enterprises across the world, including the International Advisory Services at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management in Germany, the Parikrma Humanity Foundation in India, and Anza Cart in Tanzania. Flo graduated from Brown in 2013.5 with a B.A. in Physics and Philosophy.
