Dr. Kristina Suson, a pediatric urologist at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan-DMC, shares some important tips about what to do when your child complains, “Mommy, it burns when I pee!”
When it comes to urinary tract infections (UTIs) in kids, Dr. Suson says you’ve got to talk about both the pee and the poo.
UTIs are two types – bladder and kidney – and a root cause may be constipation. The distance between the anus (where you poop) and urethra (where you pee) is short. When your kiddo’s not pooping regularly, a lot of bacteria can colonize that whole area and migrate up to the bladder, causing infection. So one of the first questions Dr. Suson asks is how a child is pooping.
Problems can look very different in children than adults. That’s why it’s important to see your pediatrician, who may refer your child to a pediatric urologist – someone who’s an expert on what kidney and bladder problems look like and how they’re best treated in kids!
