Asda has come under fire on social media after a video claimed to show the retailer over-charging for pre-bagged bananas.

Dubbed Bananagate, the Facebook video shows a consumer weighing a £1 price-marked bag of bananas in store, and revealing the price if they were loose would be 54p.

In response, Asda said its loose bananas were 68p a kilo and needed ripening at home. “Our pre-packed bananas have already been ripened and are pre-packed by hand, which is why they’re slightly more expensive,” said a spokesman, adding prices were clearly labelled in store.

Other mults, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s, sell loose bananas at 68p a kilo and pre-packed bags at £1.
