his is a month of festivals and fun! The annual Kite Festival draws thousands of visitors to Russell Park every year so don’t miss that on the weekend 10th & 11th June. Later in the month, the Fake Fest comes to town on Saturday 24th with bands a plenty and an 80’s blast for a party in Bedford Park – enter our fantastic competition on p46 to win two tickets! During June, Full House theatre have selected a range of performances to bring to Bedford’s cultural and community spaces, with something for everyone. Full listings on p57.

Our charity of the month are the Friends of Bedford Hospital who raise funds to buy vital life-saving equipment and are currently raising funds for urgently needed replacement of the play area for Riverbank (Children’s and Teenagers’) Ward. More on p16. Father’s Day is on June 18th – a celebration of Fathers and time to think about how to make it a special day. Young Farmer Being a

Fun, Learning and Achievement

he National Federation of Young Farmer’s Clubs is one of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK and dedicated to young people who have a love for agriculture and rural life. Led by young people, for young people, Young Farmers’ Clubs provide 25,000 members aged 10 to 26 with a unique opportunity to develop skills, work with their communities, travel, take part in a varied competitions programme and enjoy a dynamic social life.

You don’t have to be a farmer to join! But it helps if you do enjoy the outdoors, visiting interesting local places, making new friends, having fun and taking part in lots of activities and competitions! Bedfordshire Young Farmers Club consists of 7 clubs; Bedford, Biggleswade, Blunham, Leighton Buzzard, North Beds, Silsoe and Woburn. Each club meets at least once a week. The most recent meetings here at Bedford YFC have included Farm Tours, Bubble Football, Demonstrations, treasure hunts, Zumba, Fire Station tours and Sports. There are a huge range of opportunities available for our members including • A varied competitions programme where thousands of young farmers compete at local and national level in activities ranging from stock judging to floral arts • An exciting and unique YFC Travel programme, that includes homestays and working holidays – as well as fun ski trips • A comprehensive skills and training programme to help you advance your skills and your career • Opportunities to get involved in national campaigns on issues affecting rural communities or those working in agriculture • An annual convention, attracting over 5,000 young farmers who celebrate, unite and debate over a weekend of fun.

Charity work is also a huge part of a Young Farmer’s life too. Bedford Young Farmers Club has hosted a number of charity events over the last 6 months to raise money for their club charity; The Elizabeth Curtis Centre, Riding for the Disabled in Bromham. Bedford YFC hosted an Auction of Promises evening raising an incredible £5000, with the help of donations from generous local businesses. Other events included carol singing and a raffle at Bedford’s YFC 70th Ball which in total raised another £800 for the same charity. Bedford YFC also hosted a Tractor Run in aid of Breast Cancer Research. The run began at Wood End, Kempston and they travelled 25 miles. Each tractor had a pink ribbon attached and the event raised £800.

oday there are 42,000 people in Bedfordshire who dedicate their time to looking after someone they love. They don’t get paid – they simply do it because they care and because, in many cases, there is no option.

A wife staying at home 24/7 to look after her husband living with dementia; a parent who no longer works because his child’s illness makes a full day at school impossible; an eight-year old helping mum with medication three times a day. Being a carer can be isolating, frustrating, challenging and lonely. Having someone to talk to and offer reassurance alongside practical advice and support is vital. Since 2004, Carers in Bedfordshire provide this support to suit each carer. We’re experienced. We know how to help. We listen. Roger, a carer, told us “Thank you for your support through some very hard times. The waves still crash over my head at times but I am learning to breathe before the next one comes!” “Building carer-friendly communities” is the theme of this year’s Carers Week and we aim to be out and about spreading the word. he Tax Free Childcare scheme is now launched and could mean up to £2,000 to help towards childcare costs. This will be gradually rolled out to everyone yet with a range of childcare help already out there, you need to pick the right one..

Regarding childcare, the definition for this purpose is specifically Ofsted registered nurseries, nannies, childminders, after-school clubs etc.

Are you eligible for what will be up to 30 hours a week of FREE childcare?

Currently, for at least 38 weeks a year, everyone with a 3 or 4 year-old (or 2 year old if on low income), is entitled to 15 hours a week of free state or private nursery childcare. From September 2017, this increases to 30 hours a week if you earn at least £115 a week (if a couple both parents must) but neither parent earns over £100,000 pa.

Paying for childcare? Are you eligible for childcare tax credits?

If you pay for childcare for a child up to age 15, are a single parent working 16+ hours a week or a couple BOTH working 16+ hours a week, with total household income under £40,000, you may be entitled to childcare tax credits – check on 0345 300 3900. If you get tax credits, you’re not allowed to get Tax Free Childcare and while you can get childcare vouchers, doing that may reduce your tax credits, so isn’t worth it.

Discounted childcare via vouchers – but sign up soon. The Childcare Vouchers scheme is run via employers, and you can only do it if your 12

The new Tax-Free Childcare scheme is being rolled out to parents of the youngest children now and should be available to all parents by the end of 2017. It’s likely many of those who couldn’t get vouchers, including the self-employed, will welcome it. For every 80p you put in a special account to pay for childcare, the Government will add 20p up to a total of £8,000 per child. So that’s £2,000 added. Alistair Burt, your Local candidate... FOREIGN POLICY – CHALLENGES AHEAD FOR ALL

ou will quite possibly be reading this as we are still mid General Election campaign – and I write this not as a Member of Parliament, as it is dissolved until after June 8th, but as a candidate. You will hear much over the coming weeks about what lays ahead for our country domestically, but it is also more important than ever how we interact with countries overseas. A new Parliament is bound to take a big interest in foreign policy. Candidates from all parties around the country are setting out their programmes, but for those who reach Parliament, the next few years of foreign affairs will be as absorbing as any in recent years, and will demand more of their attention than perhaps might be considered usual. For some decades our foreign policy has been anchored in the two obvious and deep relationships of the EU and the U.S. But both these establishments have been shaken by recent events, and our foreign policy will need to be re-calibrated over the next five years. We will be post a Brexit referendum decision until 2019, but not yet post Brexit itself. It will be a fascinating period for the continent and our relations with it, including those in the number of security, defence and intelligence arrangements which are outside EU structures. Similarly we are also coming to terms, after a hundred plus days, with what a Trump Presidency means in practice. President Trump, having had a number of world leaders head to Washington, is embarking on his first foreign visits. He has chosen to kick off with Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Vatican before coming to Europe for a NATO and a Group of Seven summit. If his mantra before becoming President was ‘Make America Great Again’, his

current one appears to be ‘This is not as easy as I thought it was going to be’. Whilst revising opinion in the face of fact or greater knowledge is always welcome, some of his discoveries are startling and rather add to the sense of lack of preparedness to take on the role in the first place. This compounds the problem for allies such as the UK – and its Parliament – to keep up. The recent chemical attack in Syria, and the response from the USA, has somewhat gone against the Presidents’ initial comments on ‘not being the world’s policemen’ but equally the action does not yet make policy, and we will wait and see what transpires. As an eternal optimist on the Middle East Peace Process I am pleased that seeking the resolution of matters between Israel and the Palestinians appears high on the agenda both in the US and at home where it has been an issue of immense interest in Parliament for decades. Though domestic Israeli and Palestinian politics offer little sign of change many good people continue to work on the process, and we can have hope that it is not being put to one side.

More than anything it points to the need for negotiations to succeed for the sake of both the UK and the EU, as both need ultimately to be strengthened by Brexit rather than weakened.

And of course there is Europe for the new Commons to get into. With the Dutch, French and German elections this year, there has been much discussion. And we haven’t even mentioned North Korea, China and the wider world! Some hard work ahead for the Class of ’17.

The friends

of Bedford Hospital

he Friends of Bedford Hospital charity was formed soon after the beginning of the National Health Service in 1948. The new NHS couldn’t afford enough equipment, so the Friends came together to help supply that need. Today we have about 150 members with 30 volunteers continuing to raise money for vital equipment needed by our hospital.

We collect five times a year at Supermarkets and run a monthly Stall in the hospital. Her Grace, the Duchess of Bedford provides a fund-raising visit to the Gardens at Woburn Abbey every summer. We organize Nearly New Sales of baby equipment, the next on Saturday 9th September

2017. We sell Charity tickets kindly given to us by local drama and musical groups. Our next Christmas Concert will be in St Peter’s Church, de Parys Avenue, on Saturday 9th December 2017. Recently we bought two ventilators for patients in Accident and Emergency with severe breathing problems. These cost £3,200 each and they are now saving patients’ lives. The machines powerfully but gently assist patients with breathing in and out, help them to regain a normal rhythm and relieve the associated strain on their hearts. Early in 2016 we raised £35,000 for an exceptionally accurate, up-to-date scanner for expectant mothers. This enables doctors to diagnose problems at a very early stage in the

CHARITY pregnancy, giving both mother and baby the very best chance of a healthy future. We also funded attractive Reminiscence Photos throughout the waiting areas for Main Outpatients, showing daily life in Bedford from the 1930’s to the present day. In 2015 we furnished and equipped two Quiet Rooms, one for Elizabeth Ward and one for Harpur Ward on the fourth floor of the tower block. These wards look after elderly patients, many of whom suffer from Dementia. The furniture is extra stable and safe, and the equipment offers interesting and stimulating occupations. We also provided atmospheric photos of Bedford, past and present. Currently, we are raising funds for urgentlyneeded replacement of the play area for Riverbank (Children’s and Teenagers’) Ward. The existing play area is 20 years old and no longer meets current safety standards. The new play area will be attractive and colourful, all on one soft-surfaced level. Its central feature will be a multiple safe-play installation, with a marked track running around it, on which small children can pedal cars and tricycles. Around the edges there will be seats for carers and interesting activities for older children.

This play area will provide a vital part of the young patients’ recovery as they begin to regain fitness and confidence. It will offer a muchneeded break from the Ward and the opportunity for children and their carers to relax out in the fresh air. It will also help to entertain visiting brothers and sisters. So far we have raised £15,000 and we need another £5,000 for work to begin. Ideally the play area will be completed by this summer so that the children can benefit from sunny days outside. We will be very grateful for donations of money, paperbacks or bric-a-brac to sell on our stall in the Hospital. DVDs, greetings cards, toys, unwanted gifts, costume jewellery and small ornaments or household items are particularly useful. If you are having a more adventurous holiday you should consider including anti-diarrhoea medication, rehydration sachets, anti-malarial tablets, a mosquito net and water disinfectant – most of which you can purchase from the pharmacy. It is also vital to have the right travel insurance. Make sure your policy covers your destination and the length of your stay as well as any activities you might want to do. When travelling in Europe confirm you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which will entitle you to free or reduced cost medical care but not emergency travel back to the UK. Run Safely in Summer

Dress appropriately – Loose-fitting clothes help take advantage of any breeze. Investigate techno fabrics which allow sweat to pass through them and evaporate, keeping your core temperature lower. Use sunglasses and waterproof sunscreen.

Choose the right time – Avoid midday and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. If you’re training in a city air quality is best in the morning, and try to choose a route which provides a lot of shade. Keep hydrated – Hydrate well about two hours before a run, even if you don’t feel thirsty. For shorter runs of less than 45 minutes, drink water throughout. For longer runs use drinks which help maintain electrolyte levels.

Start slower, stop sooner – Start your run a bit slower than usual. Know when to stop, because heat-induced illness is serious. Signs to watch for are headaches, confusion, loss of muscle control, hot and cold flushes, clammy skin and an upset stomach. If you experience any of these, seek shade, a drink and transport home. Use waterways – If possible try to choose a route that passes near water because it’s usually cooler and breezier which will help keep your core temperature down. You can make use of rivers, streams, a lake or the sea.

The ambiance was relaxed and stylish, complemented by singer-pianist Claire Harpur whose distinctive and subtle vocal style added to the mood. It’s the perfect choice for a family Sunday lunch or a special occasion. Try for yourselves and you won’t be disappointed. Sunday lunch is served between 12:30pm – 2:30pm.

CLOVERDALE RETREAT

Having obtained planning permission, we have scheduled installation works for a substantial area of wooden decking to the front of the Retreat in early June. At this time new double doors will be added to the front of the Building. Although the work will take a week to complete it is hoped to limit closure of the Retreat to just 2 days. The Retreat offers a range of hot and cold drinks, cakes and hot and cold savouries. We have been adding to the menu options available and promoting various new lunch additions. Note that a range of breakfast items have now been introduced. Breakfast is available soon after we open. We currently open at 9.30am daily. Grown-Up Milk Shakes Summer shakes are not just for the kids Marvellous Mocha

Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 0 mins Serves: 2 Ingredients: 120ml/ 4fl oz milk 1 tsp instant espresso powder 4 tbsps good quality chocolate syrup 6 tbsp caramel sauce, plus more for garnish if required 300g / 11oz good quality vanilla ice cream 4 tbsp Coffee liqueur (optional) Fresh whipped cream Chocolate-covered espresso beans to garnish Method Combine milk espresso powder, chocolate syrup, caramel and liqueur (if using) into a blender and mix. Add ice cream and blend until smooth. Garnish with whipped cream and espresso beans (and caramel sauce if desired).

Add the peppermint ice cream and blend until smooth. Pour the mixture into tall glasses and decorate with sprigs of fresh mint. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really that simple! It also works brilliantly with mint and choc chip ice cream. Grate dark chocolate curls over the top before serving.

This is a game that is always great fun to play, it is very hard to beat the game (the zombies are controlled by certain rules not by anyone) but you always feel as if you nearly managed to win, if only you did something slightly differently. Having travelled the country to hand pick the best of the UK’s children’s theatre, Full House have selected a range of performances to bring to Bedford’s cultural and community spaces, with something to surprise, delight and enchant everyone, from the very young with One Little Word at Bedford Central Library, to young and old alike in a magical and musical take on The Elves and The Shoemaker at The Place Theatre. The Indian subcontinent will be coming to the John Bunyan Museum with the legends of The Tales of Birbal, whilst St Cuthbert’s Hall will host the hilarious and poignant Happily Ever After, based on the story ‘King & King’ by Linda De Haan and Stern Nijland. Families will enjoy wideeyed wondering with innovative immersive audio performance Day Dreamers in the ground of The Higgins, and families can expect drama and fun in TWENTYSEVENTEEN, a unique performance created by young people from Ridgeway School at Trinity Arts & Leisure. Review The Fate of The Furious

From small beginnings came one of the biggest box office blockbusting movie series. From its early beginning following a cop going under cover to infiltrate a bunch of criminals using fast cars it has now become a massive spy/ espionage/racing/action franchise that somehow manages to be more and more extreme every single time… and more and more ridiculous! At the same time, as ridiculous as it gets it still manages to be extremely good fun. The Fast and The Furious franchise has become the epitome of an all action Hollywood movie, it has car chases galore (many of which are spectacular) bullets flying left, right and centre and absolutely jaw dropping stunts. Not content with just that though the makers seem intent on bringing in big stars as not only regulars (The Rock/Dwayne Johnson & Jason Statham) but also guest stars (Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell and Luke Evans). A Fast and Furious film will take you on an adrenaline filled ride that doesn’t let up from the moment it starts until the end of the credits. It will never be an award winner but you will almost certainly find yourself thrilled and excited as the two hours fly by.

he most common theory about modern Fathers’ Day is that it originated in the US, and with one particular lady, a Mrs Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. She felt that just as we dedicate a special day to mothers, so we should do the same for fathers. It meant a lot to her, because she and her siblings were raised in a loving manner by her own father after her mother died in childbirth.

So she began a campaign, and the first Fathers’ Day was held on June 19th (her father’s birthday) in 1910. It grew in popularity and in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring that the third Sunday in June would be Fathers’ Day. How did Fathers’ Day make the leap across the Atlantic? No-one seems to know, but it’s likely that – in the manner of other American traditions – it gradually seeped into the British consciousness. Greetings cards manufacturers definitely played their part though. Never ones to miss a trick, they began producing cards and we bought them. It seems that in the UK, Fathers’ Day really took off in the 1970s but, unlike in the US, it’s never been declared an ‘official’ day.

Online Safety Seeking the views of parents and carers

s a result of the work that Bedford Borough Council’s Early Help team completed last year, it was discovered that some young people were frequently using social media inappropriately and unaware of the legal and personal implications.

The data from this project was sourced from upper/ secondary schools in Bedford Borough, and explored issues surrounding drug and alcohol use with young people. Early Help are in the process of conducting further research to look at social media usage amongst young people, and would like to extend this to include parents and professionals. The research will influence Early Help’s strategies for the future.

Cllr Shan Hunt, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Social Care, said: “Keeping young people safe online is a joint effort. Together, we can try to think of ways to always stay one step ahead of those that will exploit the innocent. By educating individuals about online safety, we eliminate many of the risks.” As part of this research, Early Help are very keen to seek the views of parents and carers, and would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to complete the surveys as this would allow us to gain a clearer picture of the current situation. The surveys are anonymous and the findings will be used to develop and improve services available to young people, and their families in Bedford Borough. Bloat in dogs

loat happens when a dog’s stomach becomes abnormally full with gas or food. In the most serious cases, the stomach twists, trapping the food and gas and cutting off the blood supply to the internal organs. Bloat can affect any dog, but the dogs at greatest risk are large, deep-chested breeds such as German Shepherds and Great Danes.

How do I know if my dog whas bloat?

Bloat can come on quickly. Common signs include: • Tight, swollen abdomen • Unsettled, restless behaviour • Bringing up small amounts of white foamy vomit, or trying to vomit but nothing coming up

What should I do if I think my dog has bloat?

Left untreated, bloat will kill a dog in a matter of hours. If you suspect that your dog has bloat you need to get him or her to a vet with surgery and intensive care facilities as soon as possible. The veterinary team will confirm the diagnosis, improve blood circulation, and release gas from the stomach. Surgery is then performed to untwist the stomach and permanently fix it in the correct position.

How can I reduce the risk for my dog?

• Split feeds into 2 or more meals per day rather than one large meal • Avoid exercise for at least an hour before and after feeding • Reduce stress and excitement around feeding times • For high-risk breeds, talk to your vet about preventative surgery to anchor the stomach in place (can be done at the time of neutering) • Bloat usually happens in the evening – ideally register your dog with a veterinary practice offering on-site 24 hour emergency care. If yours does not, find out in advance where you would need to take your dog in an emergency.

ith marked increases in spruce aphid populations recorded over the past few years, spruce aphid is now becoming a major pest of conifer species planted in amenity environments.

Norway spruce and most North American species of spruce are badly affected, particularly blue spruce (Picea pungens glauca), its form ‘Koster’, and the dwarf white spruce (P.glauca albertiana ‘Conica’). In addition samples of Cedar and Leylandii have also been found infested with these aphids. The term spruce aphid is a little confusing as attack, is in fact, by two types of aphid. The great black spruce bark aphids (Cinara piceae) alone is harmless and their presence on defoliating trees coincidental. The needle discolouration and loss are caused by the green spruce aphid (Elatobtum abiettnum). Colonies often consist of winged and wingless individuals. Winged aphids have two pairs of broad translucent wings with dark veins. Although weak fliers they can be carried for hundreds of miles on thermals and wind currents allowing for rapid dispersal to new plant hosts.

Initially foliage becomes severely yellowed and browned. Subsequently affected needles fall in large numbers. Eventually crowns become thin consisting of a few bare needles. Interestingly any new years growth i.e. new green shoots remain healthy at the shoot tips Secondary effects result from fouling of the leaves and stems with honeydew that encourages the growth of a fungus known as Sooty mold. The main danger period for trees is from MarchOctober and non-chemical control is seldom effective. Reduction of the use of Nitrogenous fertilisers so that young growth is less attractive while theoretically feasible rarely works in practice. Systemic insecticides give reasonable control of aphids feeding in protected situations such as rolled or curled leaves, in galls or on the higher branches as these are absorbed by the plant tissues and poison the sap aphids feed upon.

They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. Complement your garden with

hanging baskets

t’s time to dust off the patio furniture, spruce up those outdoor pots and get ahead with your hanging baskets to give you a riot of colour this summer.

If you plant your baskets when plants are smaller, it makes the job less fiddly as you can tease young plants through the sides of the basket linings more easily. Traditional summer hanging basket displays include petunias, verbena, bacopa, diascia, lobelia, trailing fuchsia and geranium, but if you don’t want the effect to be too overpowering, select a few foliage plants such as red-leaved coleus or silvery festuca to act as foils. Some gardeners go for sizzling combinations, planting clashing colours of reds and oranges together to bring the wow factor to bright, sunny spots, while others prefer cool blue and white pairings to create a sense of calm in shadier areas. Those who are short of time may have to go for easy-care solutions such as baskets of trailing 80

pelargoniums, simply because they need less watering and generally less looking after than other thirsty specimens such as fuchsias.

But more ambitious gardeners with automatic irrigation systems and plenty of time can produce a wealth of innovative hanging baskets. Try the sedge Carex comans Frosted Curls, which has slender, silvery green leaves and is a good companion to more upright grasses such as Festuca glauca Elijah Blue, which has narrow blue-grey leaves. They need regular watering and some liquid feed every couple of weeks, but you only need to tidy them up occasionally by pulling out leaves that have gone brown. Evergreen succulents such as echeverias can also provide an alternative display, forming a tight globe for an unusual effect, while lusciousleaved hostas can also happily fill a basket. With any hanging basket it is important to deadhead regularly, water the compost daily in summer and feed as required. With a little luck, your patio baskets should be blooming long after you’ve put the barbecue away for the year.

he Blues finished this campaign in seventh position, but are hoping for far better next season and have made some very impressive signings for the 2017/18 Championship season.

Here we take a look at the new faces who are heading to Goldington Road over the summer months as Bedford Blues prepare to kick off the new Championship season in September. The first is prop Sean McCarthy, 26, who joins the Blues from Jersey Reds. McCarthy has represented Ireland at Under 18 level and previously played for Worcester Warriors before heading to Jersey for his first stint at the club in 2012. The second new signing is back rower Jarad Williams, 27, who heads south from Doncaster Knights. Williams joined the Castle Park outfit from fellow Championship side Yorkshire Carnegie in the summer of 2016 following three years at Headingley. Also making their way to Goldington Road next season will be Ealing Trailfinders prop Alex Penny along with Wasps hooker George Edgson. Penny, 29, is an uncompromising tighthead prop who has England under 16 honours and made a huge impact for Henley Hawks before securing a move to Ealing Trailfinders.

Impressive young hooker Edgson, 21, will make his season long loan from Wasps a permanent move for the coming campaign. The former England Under 18 hooker put in some huge performances for the Blues before a knee injury. But Bedford saw enough in those first few months and Edgson, who previously gained Championship experience at Rotherham Titans as well as turning out for Blackheath, will be champing at the bit to get back out on the field. A familiar face returns to Bedford as Alex Rae originally joined Bedford in 2009 from Northampton Saints having come through the Worcester Warriors Academy. He was a key component of the Bluesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; scrum before moving onto Wasps in 2013 and subsequently Jersey. The Bluesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; most high profile signing of the summer was that of England international scrum half Lee Dickson, 32, who makes the move to Goldington Road having played 250 games for Northampton Saints since joining from Newcastle Falcons in 2008. Eagles The

Plans for the new season are well and truly underway. It looks like the Eagles will remain in the EvoStik Southern League Division One Central for 2017/18 which will get underway on Saturday 12th August. Before then, some entertaining preseason fixtures have been organised against Luton Town (8th July), Dagenham & Redbridge (15th July) and Stevenage (29th July). Away fixtures include Eaton Socon (22nd July), Eynesbury Rovers (18th July) and St Ives on 25th July.

April started with a competitive draw against Hanwell Town at the Eyrie, before the long 16 game unbeaten run came to a disappointing end at Marlow FC. Despite this disappointment, the Eagles bounced back to record three valuable wins from the last games of the season against Beaconsfield SYCOB, Histon and Aylesbury United to finish the season on a high. 86
