Syracuse has date with NCAA

College Football, Men's College Basketball, Syracuse Orange, Syracuse Orange

Syracuse University will go before the NCAA's Committee on Infractions at the end of this month, the culmination of a lengthy investigation into the school's athletic department, according to a report on Syracuse.com.

Under the NCAA's new violation structure, schools appear before the COI only if they are facing Level I or Level II violations. A Level I violation is described as a "severe breach of conduct" and defined as violations that "seriously undermine or threaten the integrity of the NCAA collegiate model." A Level II violation, or a significant breach of conduct, is "more than a minimal but less than a substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive, or other advantage."

In 2012, Syracuse center Fab Melo was suspended for three games during the regular season and the entire NCAA tournament for what the university said was an eligibility issue. A source later confirmed to ESPN.com that the NCAA was involved.

Also that year, a lengthy Yahoo! Sports report alleged that more than 10 Syracuse basketball players had competed over the previous decade despite failing to meet the school's drug policy standards.

A year later, James Southerland also missed games due to eligibility questions, and in March 2013, CBS Sports reported that Syracuse had received an official letter of inquiry that included allegations against the basketball and football teams.

Typically the committee rules on its cases a month to two months after a hearing, though schools can appeal.

Basketball coach Jim Boeheim did not return messages from ESPN.com seeking comment.
