Anthony Grant updates injury status of Retin Obasohan, other notes from Hoops on the Quad

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Alabama hopes to junior guard Retin Obasohan ready for the start of the season after summer ankle surgery, head coach Anthony Grant said on Saturday.

Grant, speaking after the Hoops on the Quad event, said Obasohan was cleared "three or four practices ago" and "he's not in the type of shape he'll be in, but he's not far off."

Obasohan scored 9.5 points per game last year. He participated briefly in a 12-minute intrasquad scrimmage on the elevated court on The Quad, but the "scrimmage" was set up more like a game of pickup ball than anything like a real Alabama game or practice would be.

"Guys want to see the dunks and threes and stuff like that," Grant said.

Sophomore forward Shannon Hale is back from a broken foot. Sophomore forward Michael Kessens, who sat out last year as a transfer from Longwood, has battled nagging injuries, Grant said. Grant also said that Kessens has put on 20 pounds of muscle since he arrived in Tuscaloosa.

The women's team also participated in the event, but did not scrimmage.

"Patience is a virtue right now, but we love how committed they are to doing the little things every day," second-year women's head coach Kristy Curry said.

"We've got three commitments here today that will sign with us in November and quite a few young kids in town. To see the support, fan base and the brand, level that we do things at Alabama, there's nothing like it."

  • Some men's recruits spotted were 2016 Madison Academy guard
  • The men's scrimmage was mostly divided between veterans and newcomers.
  • Hannah Cook
  • The women's team beat the men's team in the dance-off.
