All change - milder air pushing in

Fronts are moving, slowly across the country over the next 24-48 hours, bringing some rain, but also introducing milder air.

Fronts that have already brought much milder air to Ireland and in the West will make only slow progress eastward through the day, before eventually becoming 'blocked' across Britain. So it’s still wintry in the East this morning with a warning of ice across parts of East Anglia, where a little mostly wet snow seems likely briefly. For most though it's a grey, damp, misty morning, with patches of hill and coastal fog. There are also outbreaks of rain and drizzle, but while much of the rain will be light and patchy, there'll be a few heavier bursts at first. Across East Anglia, it'll be cold enough for a little snow in places for a time, but it's not likely to be problematical with any that does fall wet and slushy.

Fronts over the UK today

By the afternoon any snow will have turned to rain, but it'll stay grey and misty in most parts with patchy hill and coastal fog. There'll be further rain in places mostly light with any brightness limited. So you’ll be lucky if you see any sun, with the most likely places for this probably over southern and eastern parts of Northern Ireland where you'll have shelter from a mostly light or moderate westerly breeze. It’ll be very mild over Northern Ireland and in the West, where temperatures should reach 8 to 11C. Across East Anglia and the South East, however, temperatures close to freezing at first will probably get no higher than a cold 2 to 4C.

Temperatures today - still cold in the east, mild elsewhere

It’ll remain damp, misty and overcast after dark with further mostly light rain or drizzle in places. There’ll continue to be patchy mostly hill fog, with any breaks in the cloud sheet continuing to be at a premium. It'll be a mild night over Northern Ireland and in the West in a light or moderate West or South Westerly breeze, where temperatures shouldn't fall below 6 to 8C. Across East Anglia and the South East though it’ll be colder, with the thermometer 'hovering' around 2 or 3C.

Monday continues to see a good deal of cloud, with weakening slow moving fronts across central areas giving misty conditions and some patchy light rain or drizzle that’ll slowly ‘peter-out’ through the day as pressure steadily rises. Most other parts should become mainly dry with skies perhaps breaking in places to give a few glimpses of sun most likely towards the South East and over Down and Armagh.

A weakening front still over England on Monday
A light West or North Westerly breeze will give a placid day, but with a more noticeable South West wind over the North and West of Scotland where Highland, in particular, will see some rain especially later. It’ll continue to be mild across Northern Ireland and in the West where temperatures should reach 8 to 11C again, but colder towards East Anglia and the South East where the thermometer may not get above 4 to 6C making it feel a little raw in any breeze.

After dark, a trough straddled across central parts will give further overcast, misty weather with patchy light rain or drizzle. You'll also keep a lot of cloud across Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North West and Wales, but it'll be mild with temperatures falling no lower than 4 to 7C. It’ll be colder towards the South East, though, and where skies break, a slight frost and patchy fog could form in light winds, as temperatures fall to –1 to +2C.

High pressure staying in charge

High pressure dominating this week

The remainder of the week sees high pressure dominating giving mostly light winds, but variable cloud. Where skies break there'll be overnight slight frost and patchy fog this mainly in the East and South, with the North and West tending to be somewhat milder.
