Are you ready for Winter?
Cuddle Up By The Fire
Nothing is quite as nice as snuggling close to your loved one in front of a fire. Ensure that you enjoy years of warmth and comfort from your fireplace by performing regular maintenance and safety practices. Before lighting your fireplace, keep these safety tips in mind:
Have your chimney inspected annually and professionally cleaned as needed.
Install a guard on top of your chimney to prevent animals or debris from getting in and blocking it.
Keep the area around the fireplace clear of any flammable objects and use a fireplace grate or screen.
Keep children and pets away from the fireplace and never leave it unattended.
Never use gasoline or any liquid accelerant to help start your fire.
Install both a carbon monoxide detector and a smoke alarm in your home. Check the batteries regularly.
Have a fire extinguisher readily available.
For extra enjoyment, you can add a little fragrance to your hearth with one of the following aromatic firewoods:
Apple – the aroma of apple wood is a favorite of many. It not only sweetens the air in your home, it also produces beautifully colored flames.
Cherry – although not quite as sweet-smelling as apple wood, cherry wood will still add a light, fruity aroma to your home.
Black birch – for those who prefer a spicier scent, black birch burns with a fragrance similar to cinnamon and cloves.
Hickory – widely enjoyed by lovers of backyard barbecue, hickory also works well for an indoor fire. It adds a nutty aroma and is a great heat-producer.

Save Energy In The Kitchen
Because the kitchen is one of the most frequently used rooms in your home, it’s also one of the most energy-consuming rooms. And it doesn’t help that many large appliances call the kitchen their home. To help you save, try these energy-conserving hints in the kitchen:
When using just a small amount of water, place the kitchen sink’s faucet lever in the cold position. Placing the lever in the hot position uses energy to heat the water - even when you’re not getting hot water.
If you’re looking to buy a gas oven or range, choose one with an automatic electric ignition system. Without a pilot light constantly burning, you’ll save 41 percent more gas in the oven and 53 percent on the top burners.
With gas appliances, make sure you have blue flames. Yellow flames indicate that the gas is burning inefficiently.
Keep range-top burners and reflectors clean so they’ll reflect heat efficiently and save energy.
Try to use pressure cookers and microwave ovens whenever possible. They’ll save energy by greatly reducing cooking time.
