CARDIFF council’s long-standing corporate director is set to be appointed acting chief executive of the city council.

Tom Morgan, who has overseen major projects in Cardiff including the International Sports Village, will take over from retiring Byron Davies for an expected six months.

Mr Morgan’s appointment to the £180k-a-year post will be put to full council next Thursday to be ratified.

Former South Glamorgan Council employee Mr Davies, who has worked for the council for 20 years, is widely expected to retire next year and the council is launching a hunt for a long-term successor.

The leaders of the two main opposition groups on the city council walked out of yesterday’s appointments committee meeting after a proposal to appoint an interim head, who would be paid a lower wage, was rejected.

Tory group leader David Walker said: “In these difficult financial times we need to save every taxpayer pound that we can.”

Labour’s Ralph Cook suggested that council leader Rodney Berman should step in to perform the chief executive’s duties. However, Coun Berman said it was important the council sent out the message that it was “business as usual” in Cardiff.
