Do you have to go on a tour or can you rent kayaks and go on your own?

      A:

We do offer individual kayak rentals. These rentals don't allow you to go inside the caves.

What is the best time of day to go? Should we wear swim shoes/socks?

We went around 11 and it was perfect. We wore sandals which they have you remove prior to getting down to the beach. Make sure to wear sunblock EVERYWHERE. I usually only put it on my shoulders and face because that's normally where I burn but my… more

This place was amazing! My girlfriend and I spent the holiday weekend in La Jolla knowing we wanted to go kayaking. This was our first time doing this together and we have always wanted to adventure out to see the caves in the cove, and the seals (yes, they were birch right next to us). We had a small group and the best tour guide ever. Ericka was fantastic! (She loves riddles). The two hour adventure seemed to fly by and we both had the time of our lives. If you are ever in La Jolla and are looking for something exciting to do we highly recommend La Jolla Kayaking. You do not need to be an expert. They are helpful and enjoy what they are doing. We will definitely return and go out again.

With only a few hours of our itinerary alotted for a stop in La Jolla, our party of 3 opted to enjoy a late morning paddle with Brody. The experience was both entertaining and educational, and the sights were incomparable. Thank you for a fantastic time. La Jolla Kayak, the best way to Kayak La Jolla!

      Awesome tour company

My group booked a 2 pm kayak trip to explore the sea caves
Check in was super easy, very friendly. Got suited up- we rented wetsuits
We had as our guides two of the cutest young men to take up out. They were Dax and Tyler Great kids Told us some history of the area, showed us the wildlife, and took us to the entrance of the caves Unfortunately we were not able to enter in our kayaks due to super low tide and it would have been dangerous for us but we did see sea lions playing there.
The two of them really made it fun for our whole group. Very entertaining.
Just know- if you're going out in a kayak in the Pacific Ocean- you WILL get wet. It was October and we did tumble over in the last surf towards the beach, but the water was not terribly cold I must say.
Also, the guys were there to make sure we were alright, which we were And it was very exciting also because there were leopard sharks in the area. Leopard sharks are not a danger to humans - but we moved out of their area anyway.
All in all a very memorable day. Thank you Tyler and Dax

Me and my friend went out for Kayaking with 2 instructors from La Jolla Kayak, namely - Dax & Luke.

While Dax was kind enough to guide us through the overall instructions, experience with Luke was really pathetic. Luke took us inside the cave and was expecting us to keep rowing the kayak within the cave (wherein the space to row is quite less). Being beginners we did not know how to row the kayak inside such a small space inside a cave, and yet Luke was yelling at us "Row you fucks", and "You guys suck".

This was extremely unprofessional from Luke's side. Being an instructor you need to have the patience to teach beginners and not yell at them, and use profanity.

Would recommend this place if your instructor is anyone but Luke.

We just did a kayaking tour today and it was amazing! Our tour guide was so cool, funny, and very knowledgeable about the history of the caves and the beach. Fair warning it's a bit of a workout but still very fun. Highly recommend!

Such lovely staff and the sweetest tour guides! I came with a group of 17 to celebrate a birthday, and the staff were pros at accommodating our larger group.

We did a cove and sea cave tour. The sea cave part was short and towards the end, so I was tired and had a bad headache from the helmet, but it was so worth it. Don't skip the cave part! We also saw leopard sharks, sea lions, and dolphins.

Actual time in the water was almost 90 minutes. Expect about 2 hrs total for gearing up and instructions.

I looked at different companies that provided kayaking in the La Jolla sea caves and I chose La Jolla Kayak because their website was concise. Their prices also didn't seem inflated. We paid $218.08 for a single and double kayak.

The check in process was easy. Thereafter, we were directed to their locker room where we stowed away our belongings, obtained a life jacket and a helmet. Our tour guides Jonas and Jake were confident, entertaining and informative. My daughter was the only child in our group and they also made her feel included. The sunset ocean views were gorgeous. It was thrilling to kayak into the cave and get close enough to the sea lions. I wish I had photos to share, but I was afraid to lose my phone in the ocean.
