Since wrought iron is metal, rust is one of the biggest issues you will have to contend with. When metal is exposed to moisture, rust is the inevitable eventual result.

A fence is a valuable asset in homeownership – it improves the safety, security, privacy, and even curb appeal of your home, though the style of fencing plays a huge role in how much each of these qualities improves. For instance, a solid wood or composite privacy fence offers more privacy than a short picket fence. If aesthetics, or beauty, and security are your primary concerns, you will be well-served by a wrought iron fence, a beautiful ornamental fencing choice. Wrought iron fencing is sturdy and durable, offering exceptional security for your property. It is also beautiful, with a timeless and elegant look. One thing to consider is that over the many years this sort of metal fence will serve your needs, you will have to do or arrange for maintenance and occasion repairs. Read on for the top four repair tasks you may need to have done over the very long life of your wrought iron fence.

Rust Removal

Since wrought iron is metal, rust is one of the biggest issues you will have to contend with. When metal is exposed to moisture, rust is the inevitable eventual result. Rust can be mostly removed with with a metal brush and sand paper. If you’re doing the job yourself, make sure that you wear gloves to protect your hands. Once your brushed the rust away, it should expose clean metal below, which you then need to seal to protect.

Section Repair

If rust is left long enough, it can actually eat away at the metal. When rust pits metal, it weakens the structure. Wrought iron that has substantial pitting and flaws from rust damage needs to be replaced. Ideally you should be able to swap out the damaged section without having to replace the whole fence. Often this requires cutting out the damaged section and then replacing it with a new panel.

Post Replacement

If rust and damage have struck the fence posts, replacing them is a bigger job. Make sure that you remove the whole post and clean out the pits entirely. Use quick setting concrete for the new posts, and mound it up around the post above the soil. This mounded area will help water run off away from the posts.

Damage Prevention

Make sure that you keep the paint in good shape so that it protects the metal of the fence. If you notice issues with the paint, touch it up immediately.
