Welcome to Wednesday Night Lights.

With Yom Kippur Saturday, the Week 4 high school football games will be played this afternoon as opposed to the typical Friday night/Saturday afternoon schedule. Today’s games will feature two prime-time matchups: Riverhead at Half Hollow Hills West and Shoreham-Wading River at Elwood-John Glenn.

The 3-0 Blue Waves will play a rematch of their first-round playoff game from a year ago when they defeated the Colts, 44-21, in Riverhead. The Colts are 3-0 and coming off a 21-14 win over West Islip last week. The Colts led that game 21-0 before the Lions scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Riverhead is currently tied for first place in Division II with Bellport. Hills West and Bellport are the only undefeated teams left in addition to Riverhead. But the Blue Waves and Clippers currently have the slight edge in power points over Hills West.

The Blue Waves are coming off an impressive 35-7 win over Smithtown West Saturday, their first lopsided win after two tough games to open the season.

Riverhead and Hills West kick off at 4 p.m.

In Division IV, another battle for first place kicks off with the Wildcats and Knights. John Glenn entered the season as the No. 1 seed in the division and the Knights have lived up to the hype so far with three blowout wins over Hamptons Bays, Bayport-Blue Point and Center Moriches.

The Wildcats have already pulled off one stunning road win when they defeated Babylon, 9-7, Sept. 19. Glenn running back TJ Tiernan and quarterback Wayne White form a difficult duo for the Wildcats’ defense to contend with.

Last season the Wildcats lost 21-18 to Glenn. White ran for three touchdowns in that game for Glenn.

Shoreham and Glenn kick off at 4 p.m. as well. The winner will be in sole possession of first place at the midway point of the season. A win for Shoreham could put them in line for their first undefeated regular season in program history; the second half of the schedule is much easier than the first half.

Also today, Bishop McGann-Mercy will host The Stony Brook School at 6:30 p.m. as both teams look to even their records. Mercy lost 48-7 to Babylon Saturday.
