In 1939, Philadelphia's Gum, Inc. tried to establish itself in the fledgling baseball-card marketplace by issuing a black-and-white 'Play Ball' set. Issued in three series, these cards were the only true national competition to the Goudey name in the late '30s, though like Goudey, the Play Ball line would ultimately fall to the same uncontrollable fate -- the outbreak of World War II.
The 1939 set proved to be so popular that they made their next set even bigger. The 240-card 1940 offering again featured black and white player photos on the fronts of the cards. This time, though, the player's picture appears to be framed and has his name under the photo.
The lineup was shuffled for the 1941 Play Ball reprint set. Player photos appear in color this time around, and the size of the set was cut down to 72 cards. It's tougher to find a better selection of Hall of Fame ballplayers anywhere, and this set still remains enormously popular.
Stars in the sets include Durocher, Doerr, DiMaggio, Greenberg, Williams, Foxx, Reese, and many more!
