Welcoming August with Exciting News!

A Word From Elizabeth Aguilar, Our Public Relations Intern

Hello All! Thank you for viewing our Be the Star You Are! Newsletter and taking the time to make a difference with our organization. My name is Elizabeth Aguilar and I'm a Bonner Scholar at DePauw University and Intern for Be The Star You Are! I'm a junior Biochemistry major with a Computer Science and Spanish double minor. This school year has provided me with a number of great opportunities such as summer research at Stanford University, a semester abroad at the University of Geneva, and a service trip to Nicaragua (January, 2017). While I have been traveling and primarily conducting STEM related work, I have a passion for civic engagement and my experience as an intern for BTSYA has been phenomenal. From these past few months, BTSYA has provided me with the opportunity to network with many inspiring individuals who are passionate about improving the lives of others. Hearing from amazing volunteers has motivated me to help make an even greater difference with BTSYA by creating our current Strikingly blog and newsletters. Thank you all for being a part of my transformative internship thus far and I hope to keep providing you with more exciting and creative content in the future. Have a wonderful August!

From Lead Host, Asya Gonzalez:

"This experience with BTSYA, Starstyle®, and Express Yourself!™ has given me insight on what it means to have a voice and what you can do with it. I have been able to skyrocket my public speaking skills, giving me the confidence to speak my opinion with passion. I've made so many great friends with this show and I've become a part of a wonderful family. I love hosting and reporting, it has sparked a dream in me to become a host of my very own radio show. I love being able to inspire teens to use their voices as well! Thank you Be the Star You Are!®"

From Newest Reporter, Joven Hundal:

"As the newest member of the Express Yourself! team, I am extremely excited to be working with you all! I've already been watching the program from afar after having been introduced to it by my sister, a reoccurring reporter/host. Largely due to her involvement here, I've watched her transform into someone unabashed to speak her mind and take on the world. From appearing on this program, I am hoping to develop a similar agenda as she did of empowering others all while advocating for personal objectives."

Letter from Former Host, Henna Hundal:
I can never thank you enough for welcoming my brother to the Express Yourself! team with your characteristic warm and gracious self. He messaged me immediately after the show exclaiming, "That was awesome!" I'm excited to see his radio journey commence and even more excited that it is happening under your mentorship. You're a STELLAR role model if I ever did know one.

The impact of Express Yourself! on my life and work is enduring. This summer, I've been working with the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research on rebooting an HIV educational and intervention model for adolescents. Part of my project involves interviewing key public health stakeholders on the state of HIV/STI rates and attitudes in relation to youth. The ease with which I'm able to recast interviews into conversations is a testament to the power of Express Yourself!. Express Yourself! armed me with confidence and skills and empowered me to find my voice. I'm reminded every day of the transformative impact it's had on my life, and I am eternally grateful.

You're brightening futures for so many kids, you should be very, very proud of your work. So proud! You do so much, juggling your many endeavors, and I hope you find time each day to reflect upon all the good you do. You're blazing wonderful trails.

I will definitely review my calendar for a Wednesday and coordinate a show with my brother. Coming back on Express Yourself! always feels like coming right back home. :)

Unlocking Self-Esteem: Karen Kitchel, collegiate and former President of Cheerful Giver’s Non profit&

If you see yourself as competent and valued, we often say you have good self-esteem. Researchers have identified it as a predictor of success and happiness.  But maintaining what you perceive to be a high level of self-esteem can cause you to live in fear of making mistakes. Has anyone ever said to you — “give yourself a break?”  It’s good to realize we all have ups and downs.  Looking at your own mistakes and shortcomings as human can unlock great potential.  Many very successful people admit to having made a boatload of mistakes throughout their lives. Looking at yourself honestly and trying to figure out what needs to be done differently can move your esteem meter in the right direction.

In “Wired For Success” Ray Williams asks “Does Facebook enhance or detract from our self-esteem?”  With more than one billion users now worldwide, Facebook gives us an opportunity to show a positive version of who we are and what we do.  When we see a lot of “likes” on something we posted, how good does that make you feel?

In a study conducted by psychology researcher, Soraya Mhdizadeh at York University, it was discovered that people with lower self-esteem were more likely to spend more than an hour a day on Facebook and were more prone to promote themselves.  In another study done by Alex Jordan at Stanford University, it was determined that Facebook users consistently over-estimated the fun their friends were having and often concluded that everyone else was having more fun than they were.

Childhood experiences that are said to contribute to self-esteem include being listened to, being spoken to respectfully, receiving appropriate attention and affection, and having mistakes or failures acknowledged and accepted.  Kids with low self-esteem may not want to try new things and often see failure as permanent.  Helping kids become good at things and to pursue their interests is key.  We need to emphasize how every child is unique, but feeling special doesn’t mean having to feel better than others.  Something proven to increase self-esteem is to teach kids to work toward a goal.  For a homeless high school student to even dream about going to college just might be enough motivation to make that happen.

Self-talk is important in all we do. While teaching children and young adults to make positive self-statements can help, psychologists have found that negative self-talk is often behind depression and anxiety.  Some examples of useful self-talk are:  It’s ok if we lost the game since we did our best.”  “It makes me feel good to help others, even if the person doesn’t thank me.”

Adolescents often evaluate themselves based on their relationships with peers. No differences have been found between males and females in their development of self-esteem.

People with a healthy level of self-esteem generally:

  • Believe in certain values and are ready to defend them
  • Trust their own judgment
  • Learn from the past and plan for the future

Be The Star You Are! is also happy to announce a new fundraiser campaign that launched earlier this June. The #standforliteracy campaign is an interactive online fundraiser where donors can have the opportunity to share that they too will take a #standforliteracy. The #standforliteracy campaign has been inspired by summer reading programs which usually begin in June. In the spirit of helping continue the fight for literacy outreach, BTSYA is launching a fundraiser to continue providing our listeners with quality positive message media for our two radio shows. Please share this fundraiser and feel free to participate in this great campaign.
