TORONTO – Toronto Police have launched an investigation into a fundraising event held last May by Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti, according to media reports.
The $5,000-a-table event gathered close to 250 people at the Royal Banquet Hall & Conference Centre in Woodbridge.
CBC News reported Monday city lawyers forwarded their findings to police after it hired an outside criminal lawyer to review the file.
City lobbyists were reported to have attended the event which sparked a complaint to the city’s integrity commissioner, who concluded Mammoliti’s staff had helped organize the event by sending invitations during work hours. Councillors are prohibited from using taxpayer resources – like staff – for any non-city related business.
Councillors voted in July to dock Mammoliti three months pay – roughly $26,000 – as a result of the investigation’s conclusions.
Mammoliti insisted at the time that the fundraiser wasn’t for political gain but was rather meant to help him recover from brain surgery and his staff helped during their personal time.
