Help Needed To Identify Driver Who Fatally Struck Woman Walking In Highland Park

HIGHLAND PARK (CBSLA.com) — The public's help is needed to find the driver of a car suspected of striking 57-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk in Highland Park.

Gloria Ortiz, 57, was fatally injured about 7:50 p.m. Sunday when she was struck by an older-model Honda Civic, Los Angeles police officials said. Ortiz was crossing Avenue 50, near San Marcos Place, in a marked crosswalk.

Police say the driver never braked and fled south on Avenue 50.

Witnesses told police the driver of the car was possibly a male Hispanic distracted by his cellphone.

The suspect's car is likely to have damage to the windshield, police said.

Anyone with information about the car or who may have seen the collision can call Central Traffic Division Detective Felix Padilla at (213) 486-0753.
