“The long-term vision of academia will help policymakers and industry leaders to prepare for the impacts of major breakthroughs in research,” says ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao. “The new ITU Journal will build bridges between disciplines, connect theory with application, and promote the critical role that ICTs will play in the success of the Sustainable Development Goals.”

ITU Telecom World will on Monday host a ceremony to celebrate the launch of the new ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries. The Journal will match research on technical innovation in ICT with analysis of associated transformations in business and society and the related complexities of governance in the digital era.

“The Journal will look at technical as well as social aspects of ICTs’ influence on business, governance and society,” says the ITU Journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Professor Jian Song of Tsinghua University. “We will find new connections between technical and social sciences, as well as new connections between various industry sectors and public-sector bodies.”

The first special issue of the ITU Journal will forecast how Artificial Intelligence will improve user experience by enhancing the performance and efficiency of communications networks.

The launch ceremony features two invited papers. Virginia Dignum, of the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, will propose a series of design principles for the development of Artificial Intelligence systems sensitive to human values. Song Yao, co-founder of start-up DeePhi Tech, will share insight into how deep-learning techniques are driving great improvements in the perception of autonomous vehicles.

Professor Song welcomes the establishment of the ITU Journal as an “exciting new direction in ITU-Academia collaboration,” highlighting the compatibility of the missions of ITU and Academia.

The ITU Journal’s Editorial Board includes representatives of Tsinghua University, the University of Melbourne, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, the University of Oxford, Harvard University, Research ICT Africa, the University of California, and AT&T.

A Call for Papers invites submissions to the first issue of the ITU Journal until the deadline of 16 October 2017.

ITU Academia membership grants access to all areas of ITU work for a single membership fee.

Researchers participate alongside policymakers and industry-leading engineers in ITU expert groups responsible for radiocommunication, standardization and development.

The ITU-Academia Partnership discusses emerging trends in ICT and their associated impact on academic curricula. The partnership met this week in Budapest, Hungary, investigating the role played by universities as incubators for innovation.

The ITU World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-17), the principal governing body of ITU’s Development Sector, will convene in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 9-20 October 2017. A side event to WTDC-17 will share insight into ICT research capable of accelerating progress towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The ITU Kaleidoscope series of academic conferences encourages dialogue between research communities and ICT standards developers. Kaleidoscope 2017: Challenges for a data-driven society will be held in Nanjing, China, 27-29 November 2017, hosted by the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications.
