Looking for a four-legged best friend?

The Detroit Zoological Society and Michigan Humane Society, in collaboration with dozens of local animal welfare organizations, will host the spring 2014 Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo event from 1-7 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, at the Detroit Zoo, 8450 W. 10 Mile Road.

Hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be available for immediate adoption to loving homes at one of the nation’s largest off-site companion animal adoption events.

“We have so many great organizations participating in the event that you’re sure to find the perfect four-legged friend for you and your family,” said Michael Robbins, MHS vice president of marketing and communications. “So, if you’re looking for a best friend, Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo is the place to be.”

Presented by Purina One and supported by PetSmart Charities, Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo will be held outdoors under tents in the Zoo’s front parking lot beneath the landmark water tower. There is no charge for admission or parking for the adoption event; regular admission and parking fees apply for those visiting the Zoo.

Dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from 45 animal welfare organizations including the Michigan Humane Society will be available for adoption.

Because puppies are often in high demand, “puppy passes” will be given each day to the first 25 adoption event guests who are looking specifically to adopt a puppy. Those with puppy passes will be allowed to enter the adoption tents 15 minutes before the event begins each day. Doing so will prevent a “puppy rush” and ensure that all adopters – and the adoptable animals – will have a wonderful experience.

Adoption fees and policies are set by each participating group and not by event hosts or sponsors. Animals will be adopted only to qualified homes. Adopters must present a driver’s license or state ID card. All dogs and cats will have received a medical check-up and age-appropriate vaccinations. For health and safety reasons, please leave current pets at home.

Last year, the spring Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo event found homes for 537 animals. Since the event’s inception in 1993, more than 19,000 dogs, cats and rabbits have been placed into new homes at the spring and fall events. This spring’s event is expected to reach a milestone 20,000 adoptions.

Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo is also supported by Banfield Pet Hospital, Genisys Credit Union, Henry Ford Health System, PetSmart Retail and Walgreens.
