VETERAN COMIC ARTIST JERRY DUMAS DEAD AT 86

Jerry Dumas

It is with deep sadness that we mark the passing of Jerry Dumas. Dubbed a modern-day “Renaissance Man,” Dumas was a comic artist, writer, poet, storyteller, fine arts painter, athlete and essayist. A longtime King Features artist on the Sam and Silo comic strip, he also worked closely with creator Mort Walker, contributing gags for Beetle Bailey and Hi and Lois. Dumas died at home on Saturday, November 12, 2016 after a long illness. He was 86 years old.

Brendan Burford, King Features general manager of syndication, had this to say in the obituary that appeared today in the Greenwich Time, Dumas’s local newspaper:

“Wonderfully gifted, he could make a line that was beautiful and crisp. And he was a master craftsman and a good ‘ghost,’ someone who is capable of taking on a number of different styles, and do it with aplomb. And among his peers, he was intensely respected,” said Brendan Burford, general manager of syndication for King Features Syndicate, which is owned by Hearst.

“In person, he was quick witted and funny and incredibly well-read — he seemed to know everything. An amazing athlete, too. He was one of those men you ask — how did he even fit this much into his life? Really versatile as a human being,” Burford continued.
