Community concerned about burning trees

Wilgerood tragedy still fresh in public's mind.

A fire started in the veld next to the Forest Place complex in Moepel Street just after midnight this morning (12 September).

Concerned residents called the fire brigade and the fire was brought under control. Councillor Suzanne Clarke also was contacted.

At approximately 3.30am the fire flared up again among the giant blue-gum trees.

Residents of Forest Place especially are concerned since the giant blue-gum trees in the veld next to the complex are brittle and hollow, and pose a major threat to property and lives. They fear that the smouldering trees might fall onto the complex it borders. Fresh in their minds still is the tragedy in October last year when a burning blue-gum tree on Wilgerood Road keeled over on a passing vehicle and killed the driver.

Clarke assured the residents that City Parks and the fire brigade would attend to the problem. By 11am this morning they were on the scene to start cutting down the trees and contain the fire, which has started to spread due to the wind.

  1. Community concerned about burning trees??
Yes, we ARE but maybe a closer look should be taken at the cause of all these fires!!
The community pays alot to live in an area and then other ‘characters’ live in the veld………..these ‘characters’ are the cause of all these fires. We have never had so many fires as we have had this year & last year. The trees we had were beautiful, the area was vibrant and green, and causing nobody harm until the fires “started” and they burned our trees. The one terrible result – a lady lost her life. NOTE : Get the ‘characters’ out of the area and the problem will be solved!!
Does anyone even remember the troops of monkeys that we had as well as the guinea fowl that we had to wait for as they crossed the roads…………Unhappy & Sad!! :(
