A SCHEME to help businesses cut the costs of their car and van fleets and reduce carbon emissions has been launched by Transport Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones.

The Energy Saving Trust’s Green Fleet Review scheme, which has received the financial backing of the Welsh Assembly Government, is designed to tackle businesses’ carbon emissions by identifying how they can make their fleets greener.

The review will assess fleet carbon footprints, fuel economy and mileage reduction strategies so that companies see a worthwhile carbon saving and a substantial financial benefit.

Under the scheme, launched in Cardiff yesterday, businesses with fleets of 50 or more vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes can get a free carbon footprint assessment of their fleet carried out by consultants from the Energy Saving Trust.

The consultants will give free advice on ways to reduce fuel usage, cut mileage and operate their fleets more efficiently.

Businesses with fleets of between 10 and 49 vehicles can also get free advice from an Energy Saving Trust helpline.

Consultants will also offer advice and continuing support on training drivers in fuel-efficient driving techniques, choosing the most fuel-efficient vehicles and moving to low-carbon fuels.

Recent figures from the Energy Saving Trust suggest that businesses with 100 vehicles are likely to save around £90,000 a year after completing a carbon footprint assessment.

Organisations which have already expressed interest in the scheme include Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Denbighshire County Council and Monmouthshire County Council.
