Interview with Michael Okon

Welcome to JB’s Bookworms with Brandy Mulder.

Tell us about your newest book.

Monsterland Reanimated is the second book in the Monsterland series. When an army of relentless mummies, a life-sucking ooze called The Glob, and a reanimated behemoth rise from the depths for the defunct theme park, who will survive?

Writing isn’t easy. What was the most difficult thing you dealt with when writing your newest book?
Honestly nothing. I knew where every character was going to wind up.

Tell us a little bit about your writing career.
Started writing when I was 5. 35 years later I have 18 self-published books, 2 published books, a literary agent, a film agent, an entertainment attorney, and a mega-producer shopping around my book Monsterland to all the studios in Los Angeles. I’m what you call an overnight sensation, it only took 35 years.

They say Hind-sight is 20/20. If you could give advice to the writer you were the first time you sat down to write, what would it be?
Be patient. Nothing comes fast and easy, and if it does, you won’t want it. Writing takes time. Success takes time. As AC/DC so eloquently put it, ain’t no fun waiting ‘round to be a millionaire. Have fun with it and be patient. You’ll make it, but it won’t happen overnight.

What was your most difficult scene to write?
The chase scene in the desert. I was watching a lot of Mad Max: Fury Road while writing and didn’t want to completely rip off what I saw. So instead of barbaric dystopian psychopaths, I wrote it barbaric dystopian dentists, lawyers and accountants.

Are themes a big part of your stories, or not so much?
Themes are everything. My theme is always stated within the first 5-10 pages of all my books. It’s up to my characters to answer the question of the theme.

What are you working on now?
Monsterland 3. All day.

Is there a release date planned?
Hopefully October 2018. One year after the original Monsterland was released.

Who is your favorite character from your own stories, and why?
Dr. Vincent Konrad. He’s the evil genius who created Monsterland. He’s my mad scientist, evil doctor that I had a ball writing.

Most writers were readers as children. What was your favorite book in grade school?
There’s a Monster at the End of This Book.

What are your plans for future projects?
Monsterland is going to be 8 books. I have most of them mapped out with the monsters that are going to be appearing in each book. I already know the ending to the series.

Is there anything you would like to add before we finish?
Buy my book please. I owe people money.

Hahaha. Good luck with your newest release, and thank you for being with us today.
Thank you!!
