Background

The Parliamentary Archives is a shared service of both Houses of Parliament, based in the House of Lords but jointly funded by the House of Lords and House of Commons. It provides innovative and expert information management, preservation, access and outreach services enabling anyone in the world to use Parliament’s records, both now and in the future.

We are looking for a book or paper conservator with conservation & preservation expertise and some supervisory or management experience to join the Parliamentary Archives. You will work to support the Collection Care Manager in the development of the collection care programme and the management and supervision of two Collection Care Assistants.

The Role

The focus of the role will be to help develop and undertake a programme of specialist conservation treatments to the Archives’ collections (predominantly paper, parchment, bound and flat items), implement preservation strategies and manage the work of the team within the studios

The Person

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:

  • Ability to undertake complex conservation treatments for a range of Archival materials such as parchment, paper, bound and flat
  • Ability to undertake complex preservation planning and research, and provide high quality documentation
  • Experience of coordinating and preparing items for loans and exhibitions, including condition reporting, courier duties, packing, and display requirements
  • Ability to teach colleagues clearly and to discuss and demonstrate complex conservation and preservation issues with a wide range of people, including archivists, curators, researchers, students, the public
