Quotes on the anointed class (144,000) from the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society

by | Feb 7, 2017 | Jehovah's Witnesses, World Religions

In Jehovah’s Witness theology, there are three different classes: The Heavenly Class, The Earthly Class, and Non-Jehovah’s Witnesses. The Watchtower organization uses different terms in reference to all three groups.

  • Heavenly Class, Anointed Class, Little Flock, 144,000, Priestly Class, Faithful and Discreet Slave Class, Anointed Remnant, Anointed Slave Class
  • Earthly Class, Great Crowd, Other Sheep, Great Multitude
  • Non-Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christendom

The 144,000 are the only ones to go to heaven, and it is only for them that Jesus mediates in the new covenant. They are elite Jehovah’s Witnesses who participate in heavenly responsibilities. Hence, they are also called the heavenly class.

The following quotes are arranged so that you can copy and paste the entire paragraph. The goal is to provide you with information so that when discussing things with Jehovah’s Witnesses and other people, you can document the various false teachings of the Jehovah’s Witness organization which is also known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

  1. The anointed class provided guidance on earth to God’s people
    1.  “Clearly, in order to know how to please God, Christians do not need to hear a literal voice from heaven, nor do they need to receive an angelic visit. They are blessed with having God’s written Word and loving guidance through his anointed class on earth. If they carefully heed this ‘word behind them’ and follow the guidance of their Bible-trained conscience, they will be successful in doing God’s will. Then they will surely see the apostle John’s promise fulfilled: “He that does the will of God remains forever.”—1 John 2:17.(Watchtower 5/1/2000 p. 17 par. 20, Hear What the Spirit Has to Say)
  2. The anointed class is identified as the wheat
    1. “When Jesus said, “The harvest is a conclusion of a system of things,” about what was he talking? About the ingathering of “the sons of the kingdom,” that is to say, the spirit-begotten heirs of the heavenly kingdom. That is a spiritual anointed class, symbolized by the wheat, and their ingathering did indeed start in the spring of 1919.” (Watchtower 2/15/1980 p. 16 par. 13, Hear What the Spirit Has to Say)
  3. Communion is only for the Anointed Class
    1. Since sharing in the bread and wine passed during the Memorial involves all of this, it would obviously be inappropriate for those having an earthly hope to partake. Those with an earthly hope discern that they themselves are not anointed members of the body of Christ, nor are they in the new covenant that Jehovah made with those who will rule with Jesus Christ. Since “the cup” represents the new covenant, only those in the new covenant partake of the emblems. Those looking forward to everlasting life in human perfection on earth under the Kingdom are neither baptized into Jesus’ death nor called to rule with him in heaven. Were they to partake of the emblems, it would signify something that is not true with respect to them. Thus, they do not partake, though they do attend the Memorial as respectful observers.” (Watchtower 2/15/2006, p. 24 par. 13 Gathering Things in Heaven and Things on Earth)
    2. “Interesting, too, is the fact that 2,493,519 assembled at the Lord’s evening meal, Friday evening, April 12, 1968, to keep in memory the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. They all knew that the death of Jesus Christ was the means of their salvation because Jesus paid the full ransom in behalf of dying mankind, and it meant redemption for the believing ones. It was observed that only 10,619 individuals partook of the Memorial emblems of wine and unleavened bread, indicating that they were of the anointed class, the remnant of the bride of Christ yet on earth. This number of partakers continues to get smaller and smaller each year.” (Watchtower, 1/1/1969, p. 26 par. 18 Lovers of God’s Name)
    3. “During a subsequent visit I gave the Memorial discourse, clearly explaining that only the anointed class could partake of the emblems. (Yearbook, 1982, p. 189, Italy)
  4. Only the Anointed Class is born again
    1. “This “little flock” of 144,000 Kingdom heirs, then, are those ones from among mankind who are “born again.” (Watchtower 11/15/1954, p. 681 Who Are Born Again?)
  5. The Anointed, Heavenly Class has been declared righteous
    1. “However, the ones of the anointed heavenly class enjoy that union now in a special way, as they have been declared righteous as to life, through the application of the merit of Christ’s sacrifice.” (Watchtower 2/15/1986, p. 13 par. 14 Unitedly Pursuing the Goal of Life)
  6. The heavenly class has both men and women
    1. “This scripture, studied in context, reveals a profound truth. The heavenly class is not restricted to men but includes women. Surely, above all else, this proclaims God’s favorable view of women—a view faithfully reflected by Christ and Paul.” (Awake 8/8/1977 p. 28 Women in the Pulpit?)
  7. An anointed class person can lose his position
    1. “By the 1930’s, then, it was becoming clear that, in general, the heavenly class had been chosen. For decades now, the search has been for other sheep, whose hope is earthly. If an anointed one proves unfaithful, it is most likely that a person who has long served God faithfully as one of the other sheep would be called to fill the vacancy thus caused in the 144,000.” (Watchtower, 2/15/2003 p. 20 par. 11 What Does the Lord’s Evening Meal Mean to You?)
  8. The Heavenly Class, are spiritual Israelites, serve as priests with Christ
    1. “That pictures that the antitypical city of refuge offers its powerful protection, not only to spiritual Israelites, that is, those who become members of the heavenly class and rule and serve as priests with Christ Jesus, but also to all those who are in line to receive everlasting life on earth, “other sheep.” (Watchtower 8/151967, 8/15 p. 499 par. 3 The Way to Security)
  9. The Heavenly Class stop becoming human in heaven
    1. “In the interesting picture of the city of refuge, Christ therefore takes on a double role, that of the avenger of blood and that of the high priest, whose death spelled liberty for those in the protective city. What, then, does it mean to remain in the antitypical city of refuge until the death of the high priest? Since, actually, members of two classes are seeking refuge in that city—“Israelites” and “alien residents”—that is, members of the heavenly kingdom class and members of the earthly class, it means the following: When the members of the heavenly class, the spiritual Israelites, finish their earthly course as imperfect humans and are rewarded with a heavenly spiritual resurrection, then the high priest “dies” toward them, so to speak, that is, he ceases to function in the capacity of a high priest in their behalf. Being no longer human, they no more need his sin-atoning services, being themselves raised to immortality, to rule as kings and priests with Christ for a thousand years.” (Watchtower 8/15/1967, p. 503 par. 18 The Way to Security)
  10. The Heavenly Class are anointed with Jehovah’s Spirit
    1. “Only those anointed with Jehovah’s spirit to be of the heavenly class are taken into this new covenant, but all those who gain everlasting life on earth share the blessings from it, and even their hearts must be receptive to Jehovah’s commandments, just as before the new covenant existed faithful men could write: “Thy law is within my heart,” and “I have laid up thy word in my heart.” (Watchtower 2/1/1957 2/1 p. 80 par. 2 May God Write on Your Heart?)
  11. Faithful and Discreet Slave Class
    1. “However, the remaining ones of Christ’s brothers on earth today would be hard-pressed to shoulder that responsibility without the assistance of their other sheep companions. Really, each time members of the other sheep class engage in the preaching work, they help Christ’s brothers to fulfill their sacred commission. The faithful and discreet slave class deeply appreciates this act of friendship, as does Christ.” (Watchtower 10/15/2009, p. 16 par. 16 “You Are My Friends”)
  12. The Heavenly Class is also called the Anointed Remnant
    1. “Throughout the time of the end, Satan has incited his earthly agents to oppose the anointed remnant and their other sheep companions.” (Watchtower 10/15/2008, p. 14 par. 11 Jehovah’s Answer to a Heartfelt Prayer)
  13. Jesus is the mediator only for the 144,000, the anointed class
    1. “Likewise, the Greater Moses, Jesus Christ, is not the Mediator between Jehovah God and all mankind. He is the Mediator between his heavenly Father, Jehovah God, and the nation of spiritual Israel, which is limited to only 144,000 members. This spiritual nation is like a little flock of Jehovah’s sheeplike ones.” (Worldwide Security Under the Prince of Peace, chap. 1 pp. 10-11 par. 16 The Desire for Peace and Security Worldwide)
