Man's Uncle Sam Costume: Coat, Trousers and Waistcoat

Early 20th century
Artist/maker unknown, American
The figure of Uncle Sam, which originated in the early nineteenth century, was the best-known personification of the United States by World War I, most famously represented in James Montgomery Flagg's 1917 army recruiting poster. This costume was probably used during patriotic wartime events such as Liberty Bond drives. Along with a goatee and top hat, the icon's outfit was traditionally some variation of the colors and patterns of the American flag, and could include large watch fobs.
