"Earth cannot be changed for the better unless the consciousness of individuals is changed first. We pledge to increase our awareness by disciplining our minds, by meditation, by prayer, or by positive thinking. Without risk and a readiness to sacrifice there can be no fundamental change in our situation. Therefore we commit ourselves to this global ethic, to understanding one another, and to socially beneficial, peace-fostering, and nature-friendly ways of life."  –Excerpt from the Parliament of the World's Religions "Towards a Global Ethic" signed in 1993 in Chicago by the Dalai Lama, Swami Satchidananda, and luminaries from 55 nations and 60 religions.

What is the Purpose of Life?
By Sri Swami Satchidananda

Students often ask me questions like, “Why am I here on this earth?“ “What am I to do here?“ and “What is the purpose of life?“ The answer is that we are here to fulfill our part of the work in the great universal mission. There is one universal plan, a cosmic plan, which has brought everything and everybody here into this universe. You can call the one who created that plan “the Creator” or “Nature.” The one that created the earth, the sun, the moon, and all the planets...  MORE

We tend to identify with the body-mind because it is concrete, easily experienced and appears to be permanent, thus dependable, giving us a sense of security and control. Yoga teaches us that we are much more and that to center our lives around body-mind will be ultimately unfulfilling, often painful, leave us feeling incomplete and unhappy, missing love and peace. Hatha Yoga works with the body-mind to lead us beyond this identification to experience the Self...  MORE

In this video from an annual New Year's Silent Yoga Retreat at Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville (Virginia) several years ago, Swami Karunananda (senior monk and chair of the Integral Yoga Spiritual Life Board) gives a talk on setting one's spiritual goals, recognizing and celebrating diversity, and living a life in alignment with one's spiritual beliefs and values.

What Really Happens in Meditation
By Lorin Roche, Ph.D.

In the real world, there are all kinds of things you hear about meditation if you listen to people who have busy, active lives as well a thriving meditation practice. When people grab a few minutes to meditate, the impulse toward action continues. There is an alternation of restfulness and restlessness. Accomplishment-oriented thoughts cycle in a rhythm with restful sensations, as the brain clears its mental desk and the body settles into relaxation.  MORE

U.S. News & World Report ranked 39 diets based on input from a panel of health experts and declared The Ornish Diet #1 in healthy heart diets and #9 for best diet overall! The Ornish Diet was created in 1977 by Dr. Dean Ornish who noted: "Swami Satchidananda’s teachings form the basis of the Lifestyle Medicine program I developed." The goal of the Ornish Diet is to help people “feel better, live longer, lose weight and gain health.” But it’s not just a diet: It also emphasizes Yoga, meditation, stress management and the importance of healthy relationships.

It can be so incredibly challenging to keep a handle on our emotions when life chucks up the inevitable whoppers—difficult people, rejection, loss, failure. How we handle difficult feelings is a great indicator of how successful we will be in life. In this Ted talk, Dr. Joan Rosenberg, a cutting-edge psychologist, unveils the innovative strategy and surprising keys for experiencing the challenging emotions that lie at the heart of confidence, emotional strength, and resilience.

What drew you to your spiritual path? Does modern Yoga throw out the “baby with the bathwater” when it goes post-lineage? In Ep 10 of the “Two Old Fogey Yogis” podcast, our hosts explore the relevance of a traditional spiritual path in today’s world and what drew each of them to their Guru, Swami Satchidananda. The stories they share about how they received their mantras are nothing short of magical and mystical! Listen on Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, Pandora etc.

Service in Satchidananda (Spain) again offered their beautiful Christmas service to Nuevo Hogar Betania, a non-profit association that serves anyone in a situation of social exclusion (homeless, inmates and ex-inmates, immigrants, women victims of human trafficking, families, immigrants). ITSOMI, a local store, donated gifts that were delivered by SIS volunteers to 300 children who received gifts in answer to their wish lists to the Reyes Magos. Thank you SIS for spreading Christmas magic to the lives of others!

During 2020 lockdown, the Integral Yoga Centre of Melbourne (Australia) moved all their Yoga & meditation classes, satsangs and trainings to Zoom. They also welcomed students from other parts of Victoria, New South Wales, Northern Queensland and even the US! Students shared photos of where they were taking the IYCM’s classes from: Jennifer from her grandson’s tiny bedroom next to his bunkbeds; Jo in a National Park that was “off grid;” Mitra next to his cat and Andrea’s dogs Frankie & Bailey joined her for Monday night Yoga.
