Native Americans protest planned auction in France of sacred objects and human remains - The Washington Post: In an emergency meeting at the National Museum of the American Indian, some dozen federal and Native American representatives condemned the auction at the Eve Auction House in Paris as illegal and in violation of international human rights laws. Among the 400 items in the auction catalogue are a warrior jacket made of human scalps and sacred items from the Hopi Tribe and Acoma Pueblo, including a shield that is estimated to sell for 7,000 euros.
“We call on France and the United States to forcefully act to stop the auction,” said Kurt Riley, governor of the Pueblo of Acoma, who said the shield could not have been lawfully removed from the Pueblo’s possession, making any sale of it illegal.
