Bord Bia received a total of €1,693,284.34m in CAP payments in 2015, according to data published by the Department of Agriculture this Tuesday.

The agency received €540,752.77 as part of aid for the fruit and vegetable sector, €3,317.45 as part of aid for producer organisations and €1,149,214.12 for a school fruit and vegetable scheme called the Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme.

Next up is Ornua co-op, formerly the Irish Dairy Board. The agri-food co-op, which markets and sells dairy products on behalf of its members, received €432,215.82 last year. All of this came from using the EU’s aid to private storage market measure.

In 2015, the year the most recent dairy income crisis began to rear its head, Ireland put approximately 27,350t of skimmed milk powder, butter and cheese into private storage.

Walter Furlong received largest SFP

Next one up is Walter Furlong Grain Ltd. The company, founded in 1998 in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, is a general agribusiness company which supplies a wide range of farm inputs including all types of seed grain, fertiliser and crop chemicals. Directors are Walter Furlong and Marguerite Furlong. Walter Furlong Ltd received €389,640.26 in direct payments in 2015, nearly all of which came from the Single Farm Payment (SFP).

This is followed by Glanmore Foods in Dublin, which received €362,947.83. Directors are John Mooney and Jennifer Mooney.

Next up is an individual, Patrick Reynolds from Navan, Co Meath, who received €267,129.82, all under the SFP. This is one of several Patrick Reynolds in the Navan area.

Wicklow vet and farmer

The National Dairy Council is listed as having received €261,822.35 in “aid for the fruit and vegetable sector”, which relates in fact to its school milk scheme.

Following this is a vet and a farmer from Arklow, Co Wicklow, Cyril Goode, who received a total of €253,301.48 last year. Goode received €249,900.62 under the SFP and a €3,400.86 payment for improving the countryside and environment.

Next up is Greenhills Windfarm Ltd, based in Cobh, Co Cork. The current directors of the company are Elizabeth Mary Browne and Thomas Browne. Greenhills, which has four shareholders, received €252,181.33 in 2015. Some €249,713.23 of this amount was under the SFP and €2,468.10 was for improving the countryside and environment.

Goodman family

The next highest direct payment went to Branganstown Farms Ltd, based in Ardee, Co Louth. Current directors are Laurence P Goodman, Catherine Goodman and Laurence J Goodman, of the family behind the ABP Food Group. Branganstown received €245,012.85 under the SFP in 2015.

Also in the family, Glydee Farms Ltd, current directors of which are Mark Goodman, Larry Goodman’s son, and Laurence Corrigan, received €238,740.02 in the SFP last year.

Next up is Louis A McAuley (1976) Ltd, based in Navan, Co Meath. Current directors of the company are David McAuley, Joseph McAuley and Peter McAuley. The company received €241,147.75 under the SFP last year.

The final farm to receive more than €230,000 in direct payments is VG Land Holdings Ltd, based in Connemara, Co Galway. This company, the current directors of which are Geraldine Whooley and Val Whooley, received €238,214.33 in total, €225,784.10 of which was under the SFP, €10,801.72 of which went towards improving the countryside and environment and €1,628.51 of which was under technical assistance from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

A number of local rural development organisations funded under the LEADER programme also rank among the largest beneficiaries of CAP money, with Meath Community Rural and Social Development obtaining the largest grants at €2.6m last year. Eight other LEADER-funded organisations in counties Kildare, Dublin, two in Kerry, Galway and Mayo received more than €1m each.
