Which Was The Most Significant Event of 2016 That Will Influence 2017 The Most?

Here is the seminal challenge, and we will ask you to vote in our poll in a moment! Which of the following four events were the most significant in 2016 on the basis that they will cast profound influence on 2017, and beyond, throughout the world?

  1. TRUMPFLATION: Without a question, Donald Trump's election as the US President is a significant development. The zany way in which the Trump train gained momentum was at once frightening, mesmerising and on the edge stuff. More in keeping with a Hollywood production than a Potomac one. Above all, Trump's lack of political correctness was extremely disconcerting for some. Many simply did not expect Trump to win based on Main Stream Media (MSM) mythology, lack-of-transparency and fabricated polls. Given the kaleidoscope of Twitter messages posted by the President-Elect, as well as the choices the Trump-team has made, it is clear that there's much that will change as he assumes power on January 20, 2017. Not far to go now. Key to watch would be Trump-Earth, Trump-China, Trump-Islam Trump-Immigration and Trump-Trade relations as well as what happens to sovereign bonds -- both American and those of other financial powers -- as their yield finally goes higher and the near four decade long bull market in bonds finally comes to an end in 2016 partly because of Trumpflation.
  2. BREXIT: The Brexit referendum result in the UK led to a sudden change-of-guard at Downing Street -- from David Cameron to Theresa May -- and a precipitous decline in the value of the Pound Sterling. What makes the Brexit outcome of the UK referendum particularly fascinating is that it carries the seeds of revolt against the European Union to other regional powers: Germany, France and Italy. As the contagion spreads, the four largest economies within the EU are moving towards the fire exit step by step. The effects on the European Community, the Euro and the European Union are likely to be monumental. Not since the English Civil War have so many questions been asked by the British public in regard to arguments long settled by the Roundheads and Royalists including Parliament's rights over Sovereign rights. How to extricate the United Kingdom from more than four decades of joint legal stewardship of British domestic and international laws, partially made in Brussels? This remains a matter of top concern for the British democratic institutions. As the recent Italian referendum confirms, the EU crisis triggered by the Brexit result is about to boomerang back via Italy, France and Germany on the head of Jean Claude-Juncker, the unelected President of the European Commission.
  3. WIKILEAKS: What cannot and must not be forgotten is the role of Wikileaks and its founder Julian Assange in thoroughly disrupting the US elections and any vestiges of trust left in the Main Stream Media (MSM). In exposing thousands of Democratic National Committee (DNC) and John Podesta emails, as well as the blatant collusion of numerous MSM news outlets with the Clinton camp, WikiLeaks shone light on dark schemes associated with the subverted-workings of the Democrats or indeed the party's total dysfunction when choosing the optimum candidate in the primaries, such as as Bernie Sanders. Various entities and power structures both within and outside the United States were blamed for feeding intelligence to Wikileaks but the truth remains that these US elections were uniquely affected by Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks (SADNs) of whistle-blowers who brought the establishment down spectacularly. History will record the role of WikiLeaks as germane to the outcome of the US elections in 2016 with many intended and unintended consequences in 2017 and beyond for the entire world.
  4. DEMONETISATION: Perhaps the prize for being radical, unorthodox and totally out-of-control ought to go to India's PM Narendra Modi who has unleashed a vast experiment on his 1.3 billion countrymen by withdrawing 86% of all cash denominated in Rs 500 and Rs 1000 paper currency notes as legal tender. All this was done without consulting both chambers of the Indian parliament in a clandestine operation hastily executed without much planning by the Indian central bank, The Reserve Bank of India, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and latterly the Finance Minister's Office (FMO). The damage to the Indian economy is already colossal in terms of the falling Indian Rupee, falling business and consumer confidence, falling industrial activity, rising unemployment and rising capital outflows from India. Not to mention those who are very young and those who are very old who have died as a result of the collateral damage inflicted by this sudden move on access to funds, food and healthcare. To add fuel to fire, raids have begun to confiscate gold above predefined thresholds from people's homes and business premises. This has put the fear of Modi, almost at par with the fear of God in the psyche of India's housewives, who hold their jewellery dear, and businessmen who now know that Modi is coming after all their black money in many different forms. The priority of the hour for Indians is no longer wealth creation but wealth preservation as a sinister global experiment is played out in India by powers that be, as the informal economy totally collapses.

IMO, DK, i believe there should be a 5th option...the effect of blockchain technology on the world's financial sectors. Bitcoin has now become a legitimate option for people in Europe, India and China who are seeking decentralized currency. The blockchain is on the way to changing every financial sector in the world and I believe 2016 is the year the technology transcended being a 'thing' for technonerds to something which will affect every human on the planet.
