Number of Real Estate Agents in the U.S.
According to the National Association of Realtors 2018 Member Report, there are 1.3 million Realtors in the United States, up from 1.22 million in their 2017 report, an increase of 6%. Typically speaking when the real estate market is strong, there are more real estate agents, and when the market softens, membership decreases. Real estate agents must obtain a license through a local state agency which provides oversight and requires education and testing. In order to maintain their real estate license, agents must also complete continuing education and keep their license in good standing with their state.

Number of Portland Real Estate Agents
There are two main Realtor Association groups that cover the Portland Metro Area. The first is simply called, PMAR or Portland Metro Association of Realtors. The second is called EMAR, or East Metro Association of Realtors.
PMAR listed roughly 8500 Realtor members in 2017, a record high. In the year 2000, there were just over 5,000 PMAR members, in 2007, the previous high water mark, there were a little less than 8500. Of course, from 2008 to 2012, those member rolls shrank until they started to climb again.
EMAR’s current membership roll count is 978, bringing the total to just under 10,000.
Number of Real Estate Agents in Oregon
The Oregon Association of Realtors, OAR, lists nearly 16,000 members. This leaves about 6,000 real estate agents to cover the rest of the state.
