The most pull ups in 24 hours (male) is 8,600, and was achieved by Gary Lloyd (Australia), in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, on 15-16 October 2023.

Gary works as a police officer in the Queensland Police Service. He took on this challenge to raise money for the Arnold & McCrow Remembrance Fund, which supports the families of Matthew Arnold and Rachael McCrow, two police officers killed on duty in 2022.

Gary trained for 10 months around his work hours to prepare for this record attempt.

He beat the previous record, which was set just one day earlier by Truett Hanes (USA), by 500 pull ups.

As per Guinness World Records guidelines, one pull up consists of the body being raised until the chin is above the level of the bar, then lowered until the arms are straight. The body must remain straight throughout, and an overhand grip must be used.

Gary averaged six pull ups per minute, although when factoring in the breaks he took between sets, he did closer to eight pull ups per minute of activity.

Gary performed over double the number of pull ups achieved by the original holder of this record, Stephen Hyland (UK), who did 4,020 pull ups in one day in 2011.

The second person to hold the record was ultramarathon runner and motivational speaker David Goggins, who bettered Stephen’s record by 10 pull ups in 2013.

Over the next decade, the record was broken 14 further times before Gary achieved it.
