JOINT BASE ANACOSTIA-BOLLING - Air Force Chaplain, Lt. Col. Michael Husfelt, joined the Air Force Chaplain Corps more than 20 years ago to serve God and his country—both of which he considers higher powers.

The Panama City, Florida, native has had a very rewarding career as a chaplain. One of his highlights was his recent deployment to Afghanistan where he was attached to a joint special operation’s base, in charge of the other chaplains in the area.

“It was very rewarding to work with the special operations guys over there,” Husfelt said. “I was able to travel extensively in Afghanistan with them while administering chaplain duties to the various bases.”

As rewarding as his experience in Afghanistan was, the married father of five appreciates his current position as a chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery most.

“When you see why Arlington National Cemetery exists, it makes the experiences I had in Afghanistan more humbling, because you get to see these brave guys doing the missions first-hand,” he said. “That really put a different perspective for me when I see the mission here at Arlington.”

Husfelt added that he and the other chaplains there pride themselves on the quality of the services they provide everyone.

“What’s wonderful about the services we provide the veterans being laid to rest here, is that we give the same consideration to an Airman 1st class as we would someone like the Surgeon General of the Air Force,” he explained. “We give the same attention to detail as we do anybody who comes here, to help honor their service to this country—regardless of their rank.”
Everyday Husfelt said he feels honored to serve as a chaplain at Arlington National Cemetery and is proud to repeat the Air Force Chaplain Corps mission statement in regards to his duty.
“Glorifying God, serving Airmen, pursuing excellence,” he said. “I live that everyday.”
