Staten Island Pets: Free rabies vaccinations, 2 fundraisers, many adoption events this weekend

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The coming weekend is filled with activities for pets and the people who love them.

Free rabies vaccinations to dogs and cats will be offered Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Blue Heron Nature Center in Annadale

In order to obtain a three-year vaccination certificate, participants must bring past rabies certificates. A one-year certificate will be issued if owners don't have records or if animals are getting the vaccine for the first time.

On-the-spot dog licensing will also be offered, and no violations will be issued at the event for dog owners without current licenses.

The vaccination and licensing is sponsored by the Health Department and Animal Care & Control of NYC,  in partnership with NYC Parks, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, State Senator Martin J. Golden and Assemblyman Joseph Borelli.

Animal Care & Control of NYC has a "Teacher's Pet" adoption promotion through Sunday with reduced fees on all adoptions at its three locations including Charleston.

Louie's Legacy is sponsoring a comedy show benefit with headliner Rodney Laney Saturday at the Looney Bin in Travis. Proceeds will help homeless dogs and cats.

Another fundraiser will take place outdoors on Saturday at Zimmer Club in Charleston to benefit Saving Souls, a group dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of abandoned pit bulls.

And as they do every weekend, volunteer rescue groups will have dogs and cats, puppies and kittens in need of loving, forever homes at many adoption events on Staten Island.
