BEIRUT – Tanks blowing up in flames, slow motion explosions of buildings, and gunmen about to be killed—sounds like a Hollywood trailer for a movie, but it’s a promotional video released this week by ISIS, otherwise known as the Islamic State.
The militant group released the 52-second video Tuesday, warning the U.S. that fighters are waiting in Iraq if President Barack Obama sends troops there, as he and his top general said may happen.
The video, called “Flames of War,” also shows a clip of Obama saying that combat troops will not return to Iraq, ending with a text overlay (made to look like a movie tagline) that reads “fighting has just begun.” The words “coming soon” then flash in the last seconds.
The video’s timing suggests it was a response to Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who said in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee that if the current Iraq strategy doesn’t prevail, he may recommend the use of ground troops.
