How I Fell Prey to Jezebel (How to Identify This Spirit in Your Life) Part I

If you’ve read my post, “Jezebel Was My BFF,” then you know that at one point of my life, I was most certainly in the clutches of Jezebel. Actually, more than once. But the situation shared in that post was the most extensive. However, I want to list some characteristics by which you can identify this spirit working. And YES, Jezebel is a sexless (androgynous) spirit that can operate through men and women; she’s open to whoever will host her. (Although men usually take on the Absalom spirit, at the core, it’s the same thing.) But anyhoo, here we go.

1) Jezebel isn’t born; she’s made.

[Said to Simon the Sorcerer] Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity. (Acts 8:22 emphasis mine)
Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled… (Hebrews 12:14. 16)

Hopefully understanding that no one is born a Jezebel (spiritually speaking) will make us all a little bit more sympathetic to the person housing the spirit. No one is born in this state--not even the Biblical Jezebel in 1 Kings (her given name aside). Many would agree that bitterness has been the doorway to this Spirit. Perhaps even bitterness and rejection. (Rejection is a gateway to many ungodly spirits!)

Two of the women I encountered who dealt with this spirit had both been made bitter in different ways. The first had been abused as a child by her stepfather--and she watched him attempt to do it to her younger sisters as well. The second, had a prophetic mother yet I’d never in my life met so bitter a woman! I believe she, unfortunately, passed this down to her daughter and nurtured it in her.

2) Jezebel always has her own agenda.

You shall have no other gods before Me. (Exodus 20:3, Deuteronomy 5:7)

If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you, after He has done you good. (Joshua 24:20)

Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods. (I Kings 11:7, 8)

Neither shall [a king] multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away… (Deuteronomy 17:17 emphasis mine)

And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods. (Judges 3:6)

Jezebel ALWAYS has her own agenda. If your church’s vision is soul-winning (and it should be), Jezebel will have a different one (i.e. the best children’s department in the city, etc.). And her vision, while it may seem like a sub-vision, is actually a di-vision from the vision of the house.

It’s very likely that Queen Jezebel (and her father, Ethbaal), desired to infiltrate Israel spiritually. The Scriptures above show that God desired Israelites (in the Old Testament)--especially kings--to avoid intermarrying with foreign nations because they were all heathens, pagans, idolaters. And if they understood the cause and effect of idolatry in Israel, then they could have even possibly planned the infiltration of Israel with Baal worship with the intent that God would destroy His nation and chosen people for their idolatry. A very sinister plan indeed.

Both of my Jezebels had designs on marrying the same man at one point or another, a lead pastor at the church we all attended. Thankfully, he escaped their clutches (only partially because of my influence) and for one of them (to my knowledge), he was supposed to be her ticket into ministry and ministerial influence which brings me to my next point...

3) Jezebel is “unmarried.”

jez'-e-bel 'izebhel, "unexalted," "unhusbanded" (Biblestudytools.com)

Jezebel’s name literally means “unmarried.” Now this obviously is not in a literal sense. Often, Jezebel’s intent is to marry the man in power be he pastor, CEO, or otherwise. And yes, this includes replacing any significant other (or potential significant other) that may already be in his life. However, the “unmarried” in this context refers to Jezebel’s  “marriage” to Baal and not God as well as lack of unity to the set vision of the house, business, organization, etc. Here are some biblical examples:

  1. Jezebel. Jezebel in the Old Testament was not interested in abiding by, much less upholding, the Law of God. Baal or “Bel” was her God and thus, she brought the worship of this false Christ into Israel with a fury that had never been seen before. She was married to Baal--the god of her own will, not Jehovah.

  2. Athaliah. Jezebel’s daughter, Athaliah, married into the House of Judah and when her son and heir, Ahaziah, died, she attempted to slay all of the crown princes (all save Joash, who was hidden by his aunt) and took the throne for herself. Again, we see, not the agenda of Jehovah and Israel, but of Jezebel and Baal at work.

  3. Herodias. Herodias, the wife of Philip--and then Herod the Tetrarch, Philip’s brother--in true Jezebelic form, had John the Baptist, the embodiment of Jezebel’s archnemesis, Elijah, had the prophet of the Lord beheaded. She did to John what she could not to Elijah.

  4. That woman named “Jezebel.” This is a false prophetess seen in the final book of the Bible did not have the agenda Christ left with the early Church; she had her own agenda of immorality and was in league with the deity of the region, the Greek goddess and counterpart Diana, instead of the True and Living God.

Beware the agenda of Jezebel!

4) Jezebel does her homework (recon).

For so it was, while Jezebel massacred the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water…. “Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” (I Kings 18:4, 19)

Jezebel, with only her agenda in mind, is very careful to do the necessary reconnaissance work to understand 1) what needs to be done, 2) how it needs to be done, and 2) who to get to do what she wants. Which leads me to my next point...

5) Jezebel targets leadership & those close to leadership.

And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal, king of the Sidonians; and he went and served Baal and worshiped him. (I Kings 16:31)

I’m sure Jezebel made sure she worked it in order to get Ahab’s attention. And while we have no background information on this, I wouldn’t be surprised if she “worked it” to formulate her crew of false prophets and sons of Belial. (See #9.) But this isn’t just about sexual seduction. If you think Jezebel is just a pretty painted face, then you’ve fallen for part of her deception. Jezebel is brains, a machine, a demonic force in the earth. And she is the same, proportionally, for every “kingdom” she seeks to influence.

For me, Jezebel #1 sought to take me under her wing like a big sister. And she was very convincing, let me tell you! It wasn’t until I crossed her unknowingly that I saw her true colours. She was already attached to the leadership she was eyeing, yet she also knew she needed to be in my favour in order to seal the deal.

For Jezebel #2, it was the same method, accept this one was sort of thrown at me.

You should befriend Jezebel!

You should hang out!

I think it’d be good for you!

So I came to believe that we were “sisters.” (Apparently the kind that stab each other in the back and think nothing of it while the other--me--just takes it.) Yet she also knew to seal the deal, she’d have to get me on her team and boy did she! I literally called a meeting with the pastor to try and convince him that Jezebel #2 was his wife!! I was just as dumb and blind as I could be. But to be fair, I wasn’t dumb and blind alone.
