Dean’s blog episode 9 - The Faculty Innovation Prize: a new tradition

At the annual Faculty awayday the new Faculty Innovation Prize was awarded. This brings a new tradition to life.

Our Faculty has two annual traditions that both recently celebrated their 35th anniversary. At these events the entire Faculty staff is brought together. One must have been employed at other law faculties to realise why this is special. It fits the feeling of being one Faculty and not just a collection of separate departments and groups. One tradition is the Faculty Christmas party (of which I can already reveal that it takes place on Wednesday 19 December at a fascinating venue). The other tradition is the Faculty awayday: an afternoon and evening spent together at a location outside of Maastricht. Two weeks ago, 130 colleagues joined at Chateau Sint Gerlach to listen to a motivational speech by Arie van der Lugt, participate in workshops and in a fantastic quiz led by Marcel Schaper and Mark Kawakami, and to enjoy the BBQ and disco.

The group photo can be admired at the wall on the first floor close to the coffee machine.

At the Faculty awayday a new tradition was created: the Faculty Innovation Prize. As I announced last December at the Christmas drinks this prize replaces the separate prizes for academic and support staff. In the first year the jury declared two winners: team Vitality of Law and team IPAid.

Team IPAid

They both received the magnificent challenge trophy. Even more important is that the idea will be executed.

In case of Vitality of Law (team Pauline Arends, Anouk Heuts and Stephan Rammeloo), this includes a range of measures to allow staff and students to become even more fit than they already are. A room will be turned into a fitness space where one can both work and bike at the same time. We will also see whether a social fitness app can be developed: which student or staff member walks, runs, bikes or swims most every week?

Team IPAid (Carolina de Anunciação Moreira, Camille Beckmann and Ana Ramalho) aims to create a law clinic for artists. This greatly fits the Faculty’s ambition to be active in the region.

The jury also highly appreciated all other submissions. And even though they did not win the trophy, some of these do deserve to be realised in a different way. For the rest, let us wait and see who wins the trophy next year.
