Settlement reached in dental tragedy case regarding 3 year old girl

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - There is a bit of closure for the grieving family of three year old Finley Boyle who fell into a coma during a dental procedure last December. The settlement between the Boyle family and Dr. Lily Geyer's insurance company has been reached. The exact terms were not made public, however her attorney Rick Fried said they are pleased with the amount of the settlement.

The civil case is complete but Dr. Lilly Geyer is still facing two other investigations.  The State Narcotics Enforcement Division is looking into criminal charges for Geyer's use of the sedatives on Finley Boyle.

The medical examiners report had concluded the three year old had a heart attack likely because of the five different drugs she was given during the dental procedure.

Boyle went in to see Dr. Geyer last December and was to have 10 teeth worked on.  She was given a combination of sedatives then went into cardiac arrest.  She died a month later.

"She loved animals, loved her dog. Just sociable, really loved people, just a really good kid," said Ashley Boyle, Finley's mom in an emotional news conference on December 12, 2013.

Boyle's attorney Rick Fried says Dr. Geyer did not perform CPR even though her website said she knew how.  The office didn't notify the mother who was in the lobby even though she is a registered nurse. Instead the office staff ran to get the pediatrician down the hall.

The State will also decide if Dr. Geyer should keep her dental license.  She is technically still active and in good standing, however she voluntarily closed her Island Dentistry for Children office in Kailua in the days following the death.
