Welcome to the December edition of DATUM.


This month we hear from our CEO about the challenges and rewards of her first eight months in the role. 'What could possibly go wrong' addresses a common request of architects and highlights why you should all be aware of the implications.

We are also excited to announce that ArchiTeam CPD Online is now live and we meet Nicholas Agius Architects, who's project Cairo Apartment won the Small Project Medal at our recent ArchiTeam Awards.

Nicholas Agius Architect
Nicholas Agius Architects set his business up in 2015 after gaining many years’ experience working with some of Melbourne’s most esteemed architects. Nicholas was recently awarded the 2017 ArchiTeam Small Project Medal for the Cairo Studio which transforms a 23sqm studio within Best Overend’s 1936 Cairo apartment complex, in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, into a two-person unit with three distinct rooms.
 
As Awards Judge Grace Mortlock (Other Architects) said in her Judges citation the project ‘achieved through an ingenious, MacGyver-like nesting of functions: laundry is concealed beneath platform bed, door performs as bookcase and pantry, kitchen doubles as room divider, bathroom incorporates wardrobe.
 
Whereas some micro apartment designs can seem utilitarian and grim, Cairo Studio is enlivened by a playful palette of details and colours, and interconnected via movable elements and apertures.

Like a deluxe ocean-liner cabin, where everything has its perfect place, this project exemplifies the pleasures of compact living.’
