Why Alabama-FSU ticket prices won't likely get cheaper

Ticket prices for Alabama's opener with Florida State aren't likely to get any better from already sky-high levels, one ticket reseller said Tuesday.

Jesse Lawrence, founder of TicketIQ.com, said the combination of factors surrounding the Sept. 2 game in Atlanta don't point toward falling prices in the coming weeks.

The average selling price of $860 a ticket on TicketIQ makes this the most expensive seat in college football this year. In terms of listing price, Georgia's Week 2 trip to Notre Dame is pricier with an average of $1,585 to Alabama-FSU's $1,066.

"It's a once in a lifetime kind of an event," Lawrence said. "Even the SEC Championship at the old Georgia Dome, there were plenty of those. But this is the first and only first game at the new stadium and I think a lot of people want to be there for it."

That's a big part of the costly equation: High demand.

Then there's the supply. At TicketIQ, a total of 2,300 tickets were available through the site's aggregation of reselling sites. The peak of inventory was Aug. 7 with 2,500 available.

"That's not a lot of quantity," Lawrence said. "When you look at it comparatively for other big games like Ohio State and Oklahoma, there are 10,000 seats available."

That said, prices aren't likely to go anywhere south of the figures that blow away any numbers from previous kickoff games in Atlanta. Alabama last played in this event in 2014 against West Virginia when it was played in the Georgia Dome. The average asking price was $167 (compared to $1,066 for this year) with a get-in price of $61 (compared to $600-plus).

The cheapest tickets have come down about $20 in the last few days but it doesn't figure to dip much beyond that. It's even possible they climb higher.

"People could say hey, I'm waiting for the last minute until prices go down," Lawrence said. "Then they check and prices don't go down and they start buying and quantity gets down to a really small level and prices go up."

The most expensive ticket sold so far on TicketIQ went for $2,441 for a club seat three rows up on the 50-yard line behind Alabama's bench.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium will seat 74,000 for Alabama's game with Florida State. Both schools were allotted 30,000 tickets with face value prices ranging from $125 to $225.

The official website for the Alabama-FSU game directed ticket-seeking visitors to a website for Prime Sport. It had tickets starting at $697 with a $125.25 service fee and $20 for shipping for a total of $843.05 for a ticket in Section 314. It also offers packages including an upper-deck ticket, MARTA pass, tailgating and a Saturday night hotel room. Those prices start at $1,265 apiece for double occupancy with upgrades available.

Georgia Tech and Tennessee will play the second college game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium two days after Alabama-FSU. Tickets on the official site are offered for $130.50 each with travel packages starting at $560.

It just shows what makes this Alabama ticket even more expensive than championship games. The new stadium is the biggest driver for prices, Lawrence said, though eight months of buzz for a top-3 meeting doesn't hurt.

"A lot of the chatter that I'm hearing, it's such an in-demand ticket, people are really hyped up about it," he said. "I wouldn't expect prices to drop significantly, if at all. They might drop a little bit as the event gets closer, but ... there aren't a lot of seats out there to be purchased."

The game will also air live on ABC starting at 7 p.m. CT.
