LETTER: Millville’s secretive decisions lacked common sense

The Daily Journal

My concerns about the no-bid contract for tearing down the old Eagles building on Main Street in Millville:

First of all, I would like to congratulate City Commissioner Ashleigh Udalovas for her common-sense objection of Mayor Michael Santiago awarding a million-dollar-plus demolition contract without seeking additional bids. I also think it irresponsible of our new city solicitor to not advise our elected officials as to what would be a fairer approach. Sound legal advice is part of why he's paid big bucks.

Seeing that the building was somewhat secure, it wasn’t too late to shop around for other quotes. Something that should have been done from the outset, knowing that the owner would have to be notified and a court order sought, unless the structure was actually crumbling to the ground or caving in on the adjacent eatery.

Rash, secretive decisions seem to be the usual order of business for this new administration.

Taxpayers, this is YOUR CITY. When things appear to be less than above board, SPEAK OUT. Elected officials are there to serve you, to insure your tax dollars are being spent on worthwhile projects while seeking the right contractors at the right price.
