MR. SOUL! and Program Alums Nominated for Peabody Awards

We are thrilled to announce that MR. SOUL! (dir. Melissa Haizlip & Sam Pollard), which was made with major funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities through our Production Assistance Program, has been nominated for a 2022 Peabody Award! The film dives into the public television series “SOUL!,” an unapologetically Black variety show which recognizes contemporary luminaries of Black literature, poetry, music, and politics, which ran from 1968 to 1973.

WMM filmmaker Ramona Diaz (THE LEARNING) and Program alum Beth Levison were also nominated for a Peabody Award for their new films A THOUSAND CUTS and STORM LAKE, respectively.

Awarded to those who represent the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and streaming media during 2021, the nominees were chosen by a unanimous vote of 19 jurors from over 1,200 entries. Jeffrey P. Jones, the Executive Director of Peabody shares, “Peabody is proud to honor an array of stories that poignantly and powerfully help us make sense of the challenges we face as a nation and world. Demonstrating the immense power of stories, these nominees exposed our societal failures and celebrated the best of the human spirit.”

Congratulations to all! The thirty winners of the 82nd Annual Peabody Awards will be named during a multi-day virtual celebration from June 6 to June 9. A full list of nominees can be found here.
