Petroleum Workers Return To Work After Army Steps In As Fuel Distribution Declared Essential Service

The military and police entered the Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela fuel storage terminals today morning to ensure the security of the tanks as well as oversee the distribution of fuel.

The move comes just hours after the government issued a gazette last night declaring the storage and distribution of fuel an essential service.

The Government Information Department ordered all staff involved in petroleum distribution to report to work, and warned that any staff member who failed to report to work ‘with immediate effect’ will be considered as having vacated their posts.

Meanwhile, the government earlier today assured that the fuel distribution will return to normalcy by this afternoon. According to Army Spokesman, 15 bowsers with fuel have been dispatched from the Kolonnawa terminal for distribution among fuel sheds.

Meanwhile, Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) workers announced that they will return to work today.

A short while ago, police arrested several employees of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) who were engaged in a protest outside the Petroleum Storage Terminal in Kolonnawa for unruly behavior.

A meeting is scheduled between the trade union representatives and government representatives later this evening. CPC trade unions launched a strike from midnight on Monday over three demands.

After tamils, now Finally these Sinhalese workers are feeling the wrath of their own Sinhalese army! On the flipside brave move by Sirisena!

Look I don’t agree with the Rajapaksha regime and what they did to the Tamils. But if you are talking about worker solidarity there is more worker solidarity amongst the Sinhalese than the Tamils. Tamils have no worker solidarity as they are too divided by caste. As much as Sinhalese discrimination towards Tamils is bad Tamils should address the discrimination they do amongst themselves. They are almost as bad as the Indians in that respect. Tamils are their own enemies.

At last yahapalanaya govt has realized that infact what CPC workers do can be done by anyone !!

There is no value addition at CPC if refining does not take place. Simply storage into terminals and then pump out to bowsers for transportation. Can be asily done by the three forces. It is simply manual work.

Hambantota so far has incurred a loss of Rs 45 billion!!! Could have built 15 hospitals like state of the art Malabe hospital!!!!

Happy to suffer a few days without petrol to teach these trade Union idiots a lesson and the average dumb voter to understand that some key reforms are non negotiable.

Similar tactics required for Trinco oil tanks, SAITM and garbage issue .

At last Sirisena and Ranil have woken up!!!

I take it as a good move. The same way, when GMOA deprives healthcare for patients, Army Medical Corps should step forward to protect the rights of patients.

However, the Army should be neutral when people rally against government’s traitorous agenda to sell national assets of the country or in support of our tri forces.

We all have issues with the government. However, no trade union has a right to hold consumers and patients at ransom.

There was news yesterday, due to GMOA’s token strike, 5000 patients, I repeat, 5000 patients who came for treatment at the rural Polonnaruwa Hospital were deprived of healthcare!!! GMOA should change its name to the “World’s First Heartless Doctors’ Association.”

Over 290 deaths were reported due to dengue so far. GMOA should take the full responsibility of these deaths. GMOA’s frequent strikes over SAITM, an irrelevant subject to patients, prevented government from focusing on dengue.

I myself was fighting against the government for serious political issues that are detrimental to the country. However, dengue and garbage are social issues where we all are a part and parcel. If these issues are not resolved urgently, it will have serious impacts on the lives of children, elders and as a whole the entire citizenry.

Magampura Port agreement is scheduled to sign at the end of this week. Where are the trade unions of Sri Lanka Ports and all other trade unions in the country? Doesn’t it matter? Shouldn’t they hold an all-island trade union mammoth rally against government’s disastrous action to sell Magampura port? Same like the government, these trade unions actually have no love for country other than their own benefits.

We should rescue our country from selfish politicians and hand it over to Maha Sangha and patriots who could do a much better job.

The government should immediately investigate into incidents where thugs were seen carring clubs in their hands. There is no reason for government to use thugs when they entrusted Army to bring the situation under control by releasing bowsers. This is totally unacceptable.

        3

Oooops — …….. where thugs were seen ‘carrying’ clubs in their hands….

Actually, from where did these thugs come even when the police, STF and the Army were present at the premises and in the vicinity of CPC? Why didn’t police arrest them? Police were quick to arrest CPC unionists, some were assaulted but let thugs to attack on workers. This is not right. Unionists were in jail while thugs roam freely. What a police? If they are not careful, Dharma Chakra will one day become Karma Chakra.

CPC Union’s three demands for strike doesn’t address the issue at all. Trade unions should understand what the country is facing are broad-based issues that affect the sovereignty and independence of the country.

What was done by Mahinda doesn’t give license for anybody to do the same, but correct them if they were blunders.

I don’t know about any environmental impact due to Shangri-La and I am always against selling our lands to foreigners, though I wasn’t interested in politics at the time. I am against Port City, the work of which began irrespective of protests by environmentalists. Further I couldn’t find any report addressing the concerns of ocean floor or even ocean surface topography.

If you don’t know about Hambantota deal, you have the opportunity to see it when it is presented to the Parliament. I hope it is the same deal which is scheduled to be signed because for ETCA, they gave two totally different drafts to Sri Lanka and India.

(I didn’t notice your comment before.) — Ranil’s tail is on fire. He wants some money upfront. He is doing mental gymnastics to hoodwink people. — I am urging the President for one last time, please don’t let him sign Magampura deal. Please save this Port because there will be someone who could save this asset and develop to generate money.

This is my reply to Srilal

It is not a lease. It is a sale.

Magampura port deal comes under Public-Private Partnership. PPP has 5 components.

            1. Contract (Management contracts or Service contracts)

            2. Lease-LDO (Lease-Develop-Operate)

            3. DBFO or PFI (Develop-Build-Finance-Operate) or (Private Finance Initiative)

            4. Concession-BOT, BOOT, BLT (Build-Operate-Transfer), (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer), (Build-Lease-Transfer)

            5. Divestiture – Government sells its asset either in full or in part by way of a sales agreement with some conditions to develop the asset.

As you would see, Magampura Port deal is not a lease, but a divestiture.

We are losing the Port forever. I am sad. Very sad. It is an iconic character of our history. It is not xenophobia. I truly love this Port. If ask, I can give many ideas how to develop and operate Magampura Port while keeping the full ownership to Sri Lanka.

I wish I myself contested at the election in August-2015. It is pretty clear we have supported wrong people. JO staged usual pre-planned drama to sabotage the debate on Magampura Port to avoid it being criticized in the Parliament, which is scheduled to be signed tomorrow.

Sri Lanka is safe ONLY if our strategic points are in our control!!!

This hastily cobbled deal has many flaws.

              1. This deal has NOT legally vetted and not presented for judicial consultations. Any deliberations from the AG?

              2. It is detrimental to our national sovereignty.

              3. Sri Lanka is strategically located. Therefore we should know how to balance regional/global interests without compromising our own security and national interests.

              4. Government’s unilateral/arbitrary decision to sign the deal without consulting the public is unacceptable.

              5. Sri Lanka should have the final approval of foreign ships entering the port. Permitting, deciding how much traffic should go through the port and safety issues, should have been our right.

              6. Security issues/implications should have been investigated thoroughly before signing the deal. The world believes that China’s “One Belt-One Road” has serious machinations. Moronic government don’t understand, this is not a simple commercial investment.

              7. China has the right to recruit employees from Chinese labour market. Is there any clause to protect the existing employees or is there a port-based Sri Lankan labour pool?

              8. China can invest but the government should be the regulator.

Sri Lanka can easily develop Magampura Port for export trade, a fuel-terminal, a seaplane-terminal, a container port, a shipyard, a naval-base and use as one of the rare all-purpose-port. We might not be able to generate billions at the beginning but it will remain as ours.

Magampura port has an unparalleled value. Selling this off for one-time amount is utterly shortsighted.

                Yes, all very good ideas,
BUT , how many seaplanes have you seen recently?
It already is a not very successful container port
Naval base for whose navy? Or do you mean get more Chinese loans and build a real navy?
“Magampura port has an unparalleled value. “
It was built to glorify Mahinda and for no other purpose.
It has no value because it is a liability.

Sri Lanka was ruined by bloody selfish politicians. Over 6 decades this country was governed by SLFP/UNP politicians who have no vision, mission, plans of action or strategies to develop or even run the country. It is time to take over the country by someone who has no political background and teach Sri Lankan politicians how to govern a country.

                Old Codger

This government has only 2 years more. There is no way we lose the port. Someone will “reverse this agreement” in future. Not the President, present Government, the Opposition, Rajapaksa clan or JO politicians whose tails are between their hind legs, but someone out of ordinary who has the backbone to fight for the country will do what is obligatory.

On the other hand, this agreement is not legally binding. It was not presented to the Parliament. It was not legally vetted. Ranil entered into “this deal” purely in lieu of Chinese loan repayments. Incompetent idiot. When we are able to make the repayments, this agreement has the capacity and legality to be reversed.

I hope NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa maintain his vehement objection to this arbitrary agreement which was entered into amidst public protestations, for the next two years despite the fact that it was already signed. Same way, Trade Unions and JVP should maintain the stance taken against the agreement.

Old Codger, what you said was not true. Lending and selling 85% of the port for 99 years are totally opposite terms.

Port City was proposed to build on “reclaimed sea” not “reclaimed land”. Therefore, based on that, I don’t see any reason for him to object. He saw the project as an investment.

Wimal had the backbone to present 12 conditions to powerful Mahinda Rajapaksa in mid 2014 against hybrid “Mahinda Chinthana” + “Regaining Sri Lanka” policy combination, threatening to quit UPFA.

Simple question why are you constipated ?
                  Have you got gastric problem?
Did you buruvas (modawanse incl) object to freehold by china of port city??

According to Forbes, “Sri Lanka has a debt problem. After more than a decade of taking out huge loans to build large-scale infrastructure – most of which hasn’t yet produced adequate returns – the country is now struggling to make payments, and is looking for another way out”

Forbes: “……most of which hasn’t yet produced adequate returns –”…

Your quote itself has the reply. They have not YET produced adequate returns simply because this country is government by an incompetent lot. Otherwise Magampura Port is a golden goose which could lay golden eggs. Ranil doesn’t know how to feed the goose, therefore it didn’t lay eggs. So he sold it to China. Now the world will be able to see how the goose lay golden eggs.

I wasn’t infatuated with anybody. I started working with Wimal not with MR since February 15, 2015. Wimal wanted to bring MR back, so I supported him. I was always with Wimal. I don’t understand the problem with all of you. Like any other citizen, I also have a right to support whom I wish.
I supported MR until I saw his and his clan’s darkside. They suppressed me even when they were out of power. If they were in power, I can’t imagine what my fate will be.

Congrats to Sirisena and Ranil for the strong arm tactics. You need to have it to control the hidden hand that is behind all the peoples sufferings. Do not be spineless you have to be a doctor Jekkyl, and Mr Hide to counter the attacks. of the spoilers of yahapalanaya, many more strong arm tactics are needed to bring the country to peace and harmony. People who put you to rule will be happy, so keep it up.

Why fuel distribution declared essential service? Because it affects the limousine owners. It is easy for the army to man the distribution.
Why not garbage collection? Because pileup does affect the Colombo elites. The army will not agree – orders from outside!
Why not the medical service? Because the issue can be exploited politically.

Continuous strike is not the solution for this. The govt use Army continuously to disperse these strike. Besides. Lay off uselsss and workers with no initiative to work. Create a certain factionof the population is jobless. that create a situation that we do not need any more foreign workers. right now, every one is looking for govt jobs, not working after that higher salries. Govt has to bring everything in order. Create some people unemployed – situation.

    Champpa comment…
Why is that Dengue fever death of number 250 patience’s has been accountability that taken by GMOA?
What a logic behind that? Do you want Minster of Health of the Rajitha Senarathana should to free from all evils did county and while down-grade health services of last 32 months?
Rajith and his wife both are Dental technician rather than the Doctor of Dental?
These clowns of Minister of Health has made havocs’ of political Democracy by abusing all norms of weak system of political parties and Parliamentary Democracy.. gain power of Governances in 2015 January 8th?.
I am in my view GMOA is reputed Professional organization survive almost 90 odd years .Its leaders were reputed during days of office bearers. After that I did not their actions suited to country Democracy?
Needless to say Dr Aurudda Paradaniya is current President with good background and maintains fair play credentials by his deeds. Ongoing GMOA are far above than Minister of Health.
The “good governances and Rule of Law” that has to be respect and accepts norms of basic rights of Trade Unions actions within frame work of democracy.
No gun can pointed at to the Works by Democratic patter of Governances by any elected democracy!!!@@@. Rights are the pillar of Democracy. What else?

      D. Nimal

How does GMOA enjoy their basic rights? By depriving healthcare for patients?

How about the democratic rights of the general public? GMOA only keeps patients at ransom for no reason.

If they genuinely want to show their displeasure to the government, they should give up their private practice in support of SAITM. Will they do it? I bet you, never.

I don’t support the government at all. There are a few people like you in support of GMOA who enjoy higher salaries, perks, duty free vehicles, privileged school admission to Colombo schools for their children and a second income from private practice. People like me always against them for depriving healthcare for patients, the majority of whom are low income families, which is unacceptable. These low income patients are not in a position to pay high cost for private medical care or travel long distances to reach such places. Have you ever thought how many of these poor people have to borrow money for bus fare or leave homes very early hours may be even without having breakfast only to find out when they reach the hospital that there were no doctors on that particular day? I care for the needy and underprivileged. A privileged class like doctors are not in my radar.

The doctor is someone who is in between man and God. GMOA seriously lacks humanity, ethics, empathy, gentleness, compassion and above all patience which are more valuable and essential than scientific professionalism.

        Champa,
You’re mostly talking sense this time. Did you need medical attention during the strike? Nothing hits home like personal experience.
Oh, BTW, looks like dear Wimal doesn’t agree with you?

This was the case with Champa few months ago on Rajaakshes. Today hehas come to sense to be against them at least to some extent. but for some reasons still seems tobe licking the balls of Wimal the most abusive street man- whose mouth can only spout on Rajaashes.
No more patience, we want Wimal to be jailed for 10 years or longer.
Or the bitches sons mouth should be stopped by every means, that can only create hatreds and rabble rouse among the folks. People would not see what is right or wrong are but trained to fall on Wimal s dirties.

“Needless to say Dr Aurudda Paradaniya is current President with good background and maintains fair play credentials by his deeds. Ongoing GMOA are far above than Minister of Health.”

What is so good about Anurudda’s background ? he is the worst GMOA president ever, as far as general populace concern . His demands are not only down right wrong but also hypocritical ! His key demands had been , Top schools for their children , duty free car permits , scrapping of ECTA , abolishing of Indian ambulance service and of course SAITM issue ! who is Padeniya to demand such things ? Isn’t he a cat paw of the twice defeated king Kong ?

Though the move taken by the Govt. is acceptable from the consumer point of view, the state will be stimulated to do the same on other strikers too. If the CPC strike was allowed to continue, this will cripple the airline passage also which would turn into a huge loss to the Air Lanka. So, the act could be condoned partly, the trend should not continue!

    • 0
      0

Yes. The state which at first pushed the military to the barracks as a part of de-militarization (at the expense of policization) would be stimulated to re-militarize the machinary. That also means continuous training and all so that no one could flick a gun from them and shoot at a target as was done in Jaffna recently. So where do we stand? If citizens vote for and stick to peace, harmony, justice etc to uphold basic social values then the need for extra powerful machinary which can be abused need not be used. However, the society is not ideal.

why don’t they get rid of this buggers permanently and ask the army to do the distribution. That way any army jobs will be secured after their hard fought victory and these buggers who want to inconvenience the public can look for another job, like cutting grass and chopping tree branches and other manual work where people have to sweat hard for their daily income. A guy who was whole day taking off grass by the roots with a mammoty and received 2000 rupees had to wait in a petrol queue in the evening to get petrol for his trishaw so that he could go the next day to do the same job. From 7.30 in the morning to 2.30 in the afternoon clearing that long type of grass in gampola and walking to and back from the remote site and then having to wait for hours in a queue while these buggers most probably clock in and clock out every day as they wish and then strike.

“”why don’t they get rid of this buggers permanently and ask the army to do the distribution.””
the danger is when the army pulls dung carts and populates the workplace they would want to rule the people as in a dictatorship.

        Dinesh.

at least they must keep the army doing what it is doing now and sack the buggers whose jobs the army has replaced. Then they can quietly look for people who are selected on merit basis and not political appointments and then slowly get rid of the army presence little by little. Most of these buggers will be political appointees of the 10 year rajapakshe presidency who are hell bent on toppling this government. In an essentila service you can’t have employees going and coming whenever they please to do so.There must be discipline like in the army.Until we reach that level of discipline we must use the army which is anyway idling.

and the army are also political appointees therefore the STF stood guard.
He has applied as to what Cameron or Blair did when the farmers blocked the distribution of oil. Finally the lead farmer was paid and he decide to be unavailable for comment. everything about british protest and contention hangs on a thread. bank protestors at St Paul’s church were physically ousted while the wall street protestors went missing. You need to study the temperament Ranil was a youth minister he should know.

    @Mario
