Southwark School is a K-8 school located at 9th and Mifflin Streets. In addition to 40 Head Start pre-K students, Southwark has 684 K-8 students. We are an extraordinarily diverse school, reflective of our unique South Philadelphia community. Southwark is proud of our diversity and our commitment to being a true neighborhood school. We are 42% Asian, 33% Hispanic, 14% African-American, 10% White, and 1% Multi-Ethnic/Non-Hispanic. When dialects are taken into account, there are nearly 35 different languages spoken in our hallways every day! As we are a Philadelphia public school, we do, however, struggle with a lack of resources and a neighborhood community vulnerable to poverty. 100% of our students qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch according to the School District of Philadelphia.
Despite the difficulties associated with educating our community's future leaders and citizens without adequate budgetary and resource support, we try our best to provide our students with fun and impactful extracurricular experiences and opportunities. One example of our efforts to create a vibrant school community is our annual Fun Day. Every year in June, Southwark throws an end-of-the-year celebration in our schoolyard. 8th grade students create carnival booths and activities for the younger children, and we invite parents, family members, community members and school partners to come spend the day celebrating our students' success this year.
This year's Fun Day will be held on June 3. We are expecting 1,000 people to be in attendance. A crucial part of Fun Day's success is procuring enough food, drinks, and snacks for our students and guests throughout the day.
In addition, we are trying to raise enough money to purchase a PHOTOBOOTH for the day! We want our students to be able to take home a tangible memory of Fun Day, so that they can always be reminded that hardwork in school will be rewarded in a variety of ways. We hope with your help to make Fun Day 2016 as amazing as possible so we can honor our incredible and well-deserving students!
